Looking for information on Anne Mitchell, Longford, Ireland

Query by danacastleton

My great-grandmother Anne Mitchell was born in Longford, Ireland and married an Anthony Richardson Castleton.

In 1901 she lived in River Street, Clara, Ireland and also in 1911. She was a widow in both census and had living with her a son, Samuel and a daughter, Evelyn but in 1911 it was just Samuel and Anne. There may also be a connection to the Cobbe family who came from Kings County.

Any information would be much appreciated as I have very little to go on.

Catherine Mitchell Higgins, older sister of Anne Mitchell was probably born at Curry, near the village of Kenagh, Co Longford. She was certainly living there when she married. They were a Church of Ireland family and she married Archibald Higgins in St Georges Church, Kenagh (Parish of Kilcommock) in 1854. They farmed at Cartrons Kenagh Co Longford where the Higgins family had lived since at least 1760 when John Higgins is noted as a tenant. It appears on John Higgins death the original farm at Cartrons was split between his son Archibald and a daughter (unnamed and uncertain who she was but she was married).

Thank you John once again for the info. It is so nice to have people (distant relatives) who have the answers to the many blanks in my tree. I was a late child so I'm lucky that I remember my father even though he died when I was young and he was elderly. My mother wasn't even born when my father's parents died so she never got to meet them either.

Hi Dana, only just spotted this from 18 months ago so not sure if you are still reading/searching on here. My grandfather was Walter Mitchell Higgins and he was born at Cartron, Kenagh. He married Sarah Louise Rollins from Kilashee and lived on the Bonds estate at Farragh, Killoe, Co Longford. They are both passed away now but we're buried in the family plot at St George's, Kenagh. I am actually coming over to Kenagh next week as my mother recently passed away and we are interning her ashes in the family plot ( I now live in Scotland). I'm pretty sure that somewhere I have a Boer War medal for a Pte Archibald Higgins and along with it a load of family history with names/dates etc that was handed to my father, I must look it out and see if any mention of Anne Mitchell. Fancy me having a relative on the far side of the world.

Hi Walter
Thank you for your response. My apology for the extremely late reply. I am very sorry to hear of your mum's passing. It's not an easy thing to lose a parent. My mum past 20 months ago but it still hurts and recently my mother-in-law passed away (Monday last week). My nearly 4 month old daughter still will grow up with both her granddads though. Yes, NZ is along ways away from where you are. I've had to take a small break from tree research due to the new addition to the family but I'm still passionate in tracking down info behind the names in my tree.
Cheers - Dee Castleton
