Looking for Information on Pagan

I am researching the PAGAN name from my father's side of the family. I think they may have originated in Dumfries and Galloway in the late 1600's. My own branch of the family moved from Dumfries to Glasgow and then to Edinburgh. I started the research but have become swamped by the numbers! I did not realise how many PAGANS there were (are). I am using Scotlands' People but it has now become too expensive due to the number of ancestors so I am looking for help from other avenues.
