There are at least two distinct Loos surnames. One is Dutch and low German coming from a nickname for Nicholas. The other is found in Alsace and comes from high German meaning share or portion. In both cases the name is pronouced Lohse with the "oo" sounding like the oo in floor or door.

My great grandfather Charles Louis Loos was the son of Jacques George Loos and Philippina Kull. He had a brother Philip would lived in Stubenville, Ohio. The family was from Woerth in Lower Alsace and settled in Stark County, Ohio, in the 1830's. Charles became a college professor (ancient languages) and married Rosetta Kerr.
