Looking for Parents of J W Turner

My Great Grandfather is J W Turner b. Sept 3, 1850 in Missouri, Married Julia Fredona Smith in 1889 in Roswell, New Mexico. I have hit a brick wall in finding his parents. His parents were both from Virginia and I have now found Julia's Mother, but not her father as they were married between the 1870 and 1880 census.
