Thanks for that I'll have a study and let you know:

there were two James Howarth's? One is 1775-1851 and married to Margaret Partington and the other is 1776-1852. married to Sarah Hughes - this one is our ancestor.

I can't find Parish records for the birth of James 1776. There are a couple in Bury but not sure if any are correct and even if we got the marraige certificate for him and Sarah the father isn't named on the certificate before 1850.
