Looking for Pruitts from Southern Ohio KY W VA VA Are

The Pruitts in my family are from Virginia-West Virginia, Kentucky and moved to southern Ohio. The oldest date I go back to is around 1840, for William Pruett, says he was born in West Virgina, but I don't think West Virginia was a state yet. I got the info from the 1880 census. His wife's name was Martha. They had a son, James S. who married Emma Shafer. James and Emma had a son William, who was my grandfather.
