Looking for Richardson Only Found on 1881 Census for Hull

By crisp51 August 6, 2015 1607 views 8 comments

Mary Richardson and her husband are on the 1881 census living with married sister Caroline Fent (now Hare) and her family. Mary is "Married" to James Richardson b Jedbrough, Scotland. He is a blacksmith. I can't find either Mary or James Richardson in any other census living anywhere. I suspect Mary (nee Fent), who married Hercules Overton (also a blacksmith) in Hull in 1867, was not married to James Richardson - but where did Mary go after 1881? Or, perhaps Mary and Hercules Overton were both lying about their surname and place of birth - but why? Incidentally, I have not found Hercules Overton on the 1881 census anywhere else although I do know about him from 1891 onwards. I would be grateful for any help to prove who they were or to trace Mary Fent/Overton/Richardson.Please let me know if you need any more details.

There doesn't appear to be a marriage for Hercules to Charlotte either

Hello asheppard
Yes, it looks like you have found Mary Fent's details and Hercules Overton in 1891 with his "wife" Charlotte (Emptage). Thank you very much for all your research, it is very kind of you. My problem is that I can't find Mary or Hercules after they married in 1876 in Hull. I assume he lived with Charlotte, and had a lot of children with her, without marrying her because he was already married to Mary. James Richardson and wife Mary on 1881 census fit the bill but that seems very odd and I can't find either of them after that either.

Thanks again

There is a James Richardson on the 1891 Scotland Census inmate in Prison, born Jedbrugh Roxburghshire and a Mary Richardson living on her own married, no husband it does say husband live....... but the writing is too hard to decipher anything.

1891 Census
Name: James Richardson
Age: 48
Estimated birth year: abt 1843
Relationship: Prisoner (Institutional)
Gender: Male
Where born: Jedburgh, Roxburghshire -
Registration Number: 685/3
Registration district: Canongate
Civil Parish: Edinburgh Greenside
County: Midlothian
Address: Regent Road
Occupation: General Labourer
ED: Her Majesty's Prison

It might be him?

I found Hercules 1871 living with parents (above post) but couldn't find any trace of Mary as Fent/Overton or Richardson.

Marriages Jun 1867
FENT Mary Sculcoates 9d 269
OVERTON Hercules Sculcoates 9d 269

Hello - Yes, I saw that prison record and it could be "my" James Richardson and that would prove it is not the same person as Hercules Overton at least. I think Mary must be telling fibs about being married to James Richardson but that is probably her living with her sister Caroline Hare. I suspect she then "married" so changed her name and that is why we can't find her later. I have spent years looking for Hercules and wife Charlotte together and separately on the 1881 census but come up with nothing at all. Thank you very much for your interest and help.

Do you know what Charlotte's maiden name was??

crisp51

Hello - Yes her maiden name was Emptage - she was Charlotte Messenger Emptage b Great Grimsby, Lincs. I know a lot about her and her family and I found her on all previous and post 1881 census records. There are a couple of Charlotte Emptages who appear on the 1881 census but I don't think they are my Grt Grandmother.
