I think you will find Robert was the husband of Nellie Selina WOOLCOCK nee STOKES and not her father.
They had about five children together from memory.

Kamoo

Yes sorry I am mistaken I am looking for Robert's father and think his name may be hugh. There was a Hugh and Elizabeth Creetin (Crighton) on the Norman morrison arrived sa in 1865. There are children mentioned but no Robert so I thought maybe Robert was born in Australia and not Ayrshire. I cannot find a birth or death date for Robert.

Nellie Selina Stokes (harrigan) is my Great Grandmother.

thanks for the quick response it was a great surprise.

cheers, Karina

MARRIAGE.

Groom: Robert John Creighton HARRIGAN.
Age: 40 years.
Status: Single.
Father: Hugh HARRIGAN.

Bride: Nellie Selina WOOLCOCK.
Age: 22 years.
Status: Divorced. (See janilye's link above)
Father: Thomas STOKES.

Date married: 17 May 1911.
Place: Residence of John BARKER, Klemzig, South Australia.
Ref: Registry of Marriages, South Australia. Book 247. Page 629.

Going by Robert's age given when married he was born circa 1871 and his father's name was Hugh. I think Robert may have lowered his age when he married because Nellie was only 22 years old, so it's possible the Hugh and Elizabeth that arrived in South Australia in 1865 were his parents.

So I Just need to find find details of Robert's birth Certificate to confirm mother and father. It was suggested that I go to Adelaide and go to the SA Genealogy Society in Unley to search the Catholic Birth Christening records for Robert. As I live in Port Augusta it will have to wait until the next time I visit. Thanks for all your help.

tonkin

Searched the South Australian Birth Records and there is no birth recorded for your Robert HARRIGAN, nor can I find any births recorded to Hugh and Elizabeth in South Australia.

Also searched the South Australian Death Records and unable to find a death for Robert and Nellie. If you know where Nellie died it may assist with a death search for Robert.

Kamoo

Are you able to follow the link to this page: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stokes-1795

This is all I have on her. My mum thinks they may have moved to Mildura for a time. Would have been when I was a toddler. Thanks, again.

janilye

Nellie is a nickname for Ellen so perhaps you should have been looking for Ellen Selina.
He died in South Australia.
Chronicle (Adelaide, SA) Thursday 29 September 1949
HARRIGAN.. On Sept. 24, at 17 Forest St., Glandore (suddenly),
Robert, husband of Ellen Selina Harrigan. Aged 80 years.
Now you have the date you can order the certificate.

tonkin

Well done janilye.

I did find a death for Robert HARRIGAN but had no way of knowing if it was the correct Robert, but your find confirms he was. Here are the death details.

Name: Robert HARRIGAN.
Died: 24 September 1949. (Born circa 1869)
Place: Glandore, South Australia.
Age: 80 years.
Status: Married.
Residence: Glandore, South Australia.
Ref: Registry of Deaths, South Australia. Book 745. Page 4965.

No death located for Nellie or Ellen HARRIGAN in South Australia.
At least we know she was still alive in 1949.

DEATH.

Name: Ellen Selina CHERRY.
Died: 1972 Mildura, Victoria.
Age: 83 years.
Father: Thomas STOKE.
Mother: Jane JENNER.
Ref: Registry of Deaths, Victoria. Reg #12240.

I think this may be the death of your Nellie Selina HARRIGAN nee STOKE. Must have remarried after Robert died.

Took a bit of time to find this death so hope I'm on the right track.
Death certificate may include previous husband and children.

You guys are just awesome. I will be posting some more on others that I am also researching.

I do remember going to her home (although don't remember the house or where it was) just playing outside in the backyard and I am sure that my uncle Robert, my mums brother was there visiting with us also. And I was 5 years old when she died, so that fits as well.

She died of stomach cancer, same as her daughter Jean, and then her daughter, my auntie Lee all died of stomach cancer.

So now I somehow need to link up Hugh Harrigan and Elizabeth Creetin (Crighton) on the Norman morrison arrived sa in 1865. That is if it is the correct Hugh.

Thanks again guys, stopped me from going around and around in circles.

DEATHS.

  • Status at time of death may be an informant error. No second marriage located for Hugh after Elizabeth's death.

If my memory is correct the South Australian Death Certificates for these years did not included names of children of the deceased person, but the death notices appearing in the newspapers may. With a bit of luck Robert's name will turn up.

janilye

@ tokin,
Notices regarding Hugh Harrigan and his wife did not mention any family apart from 'a daughter ( Mrs. Bowden ) ' which is where Hugh Harrigan's funeral departed from. Notices did not give a christian name for Mrs. Bowden. There may be a marriage registration for Bowden/Harrigan unless she were previously married.

tonkin

Mrs. BOWDEN will be Hugh's daughter Annie.

MARRIAGE.

Groom: Richard Joseph BOWDEN.
Age: 28 years.
Status: Single.
Father: John BOWDEN.

Bride: Annie HARRINGTON.
Age: 17 years.
Status: Single.
Father: Hugh HARRINGTON.

Date married: 29 December 1879.
Place: St Luke Church, Adelaide, South Australia.
Ref: Registry of Marriages, South Australia. Book 121. Page 1301.

Annie recorded as HARRINGTON in the marriage records and recorded as HARRIGAN in the birth records of her children.

Looks like the death notice in the newspaper is of no help.

I did receive another email via another forum stating information from the Biographical Index of South Australia 1836 - 1885.

HARRIGAN, Hugh, b: c1839 AYR SCT arr: (c1865-)NORMAN MORRISON occ: Labourer res: Adelaide rel:Rc

m:Eliz nee CREETIN b:c1840 ch: Hugh (1859-), Jane (c1861-), Annie (c1863-), Mary (c1865-), Eliz (1867-), Robt (1871).

This was how I thought that this Hugh and Elizabeth could be Roberts father.

But every other record I find does not have the extra two kids Eliz and Robt. Obvisouly they were both born after they arrived is SA, but I still cannot find any record.

Just putting it out there? Do you think I have enough information to link Robert John Creighton Harrigan to Hugh and Elizabeth (Creighton) Harrigan?

tonkin

I have now searched all the Australian Birth Records for all states but could not find a birth for Robert. It's possible his birth was not registered, or he was not born in Australia.

Did Hugh and Elizabeth leave Australia for a few years and then return?

You still need to find some sort of record to connect Robert to Hugh and Elizabeth. It's a long shot but if Hugh and Elizabeth made a Will their children may be mentioned.

Robert's death certificate may also include a few more clues, including how long he had lived in Australia.

To find answers you need to ask questions, so keep putting it out there. Sooner or later I hope someone will answer you call.

janilye

Wait till you see Elizabeth Harrigan's death certificate. They should show her children living and deceased.
On this emmigrant's list the Harrigan's are refered to as Harvey and the Creeton's become Cretore. I've never heard of a 'Cretore' in S.A However there was a Cretoer. I went through 4 separate immigration lists and all were different.
I found two Hugh Harrigans one a tailor and one a labourer.
Just be patient. collect certificates.
Robert's birth may have been registered as 'infant'
All cabs were licensed ask your librarian to make enquiries with the state library as to lists I think it was called the Hackney Carriage License and paid to the city council. Also I believe there was a cab and draymen,s union all applications would include a birthdate and where born, Marital status etc.
