I'm a McLaren, from Greenock Scotland, now living in Australia. I've done quite a work on my line. Give me more details of your links if you think we're connected.

Hi to Sheenamac
My McLaren line also came out from Greenock around 1875 to NZ. I have a small booklet written about them in 1984. They are difficult back beyond that point, about 1830 they fade into the mist of time. Might have been from Ireland before Greenock, unsure.

Hi Aden

I'm also on Ancestry. Do you have the name/s of your Greenock relations. It would be nice if we found a connection.

Sheena

Hi Sheena
Have you done a DNA test with any of the major testing companies?
That can be helpful.
I have both on-line trees and said booklet on the McLaren family in Dunedin NZ as resources.
I'll attach links for both below.

I've done my DNA through Ancestry and had some hits. I actually don't need any help with my research as I'm happy with how far I've gone, but I'm always happy to find new connections. With this in mind, I wonder who your Greenock relations are.

Is your DNA account name sheenamac or different? tree and names on Ancestry are often hard to locate, the search is a bit problematic.
My Greenock relations (as per info in the like provided) were

James McLaren (1800-) and his wife Agnes Murray (1807-) believed to be from Antrim in Ireland.
They had two sons (that we know of) who came to Scotland, James (1828-1864) who went to Paisley and John (1840-1898) who went to Greenock and worked as a shipwright. John married Ellen Mullen in Greenock in 1864, she was also of Irish parents. The couple had five children in Scotland before departing for New Zealand in 1875.

Hi Aden. My DNA is in the name of Sheenamac. I don't think we're related. I've traced my McLarens back to early 1800s and there's not evidence they came from Ireland.

by adenshillito on 2020-01-11 22:19:47

No, my Mclarens seem to have come straight out from Scotland to New Zealand, a few of my lines stopped over in Australia for a time but not these ones. Thanks.

by sheenamac on 2020-01-11 23:19:31

I'm not sure why you referred to Australia. None of my ancestors were in Australia. They did and still do live in Greenock. I grew up in Greenock and migrated in 1974.

by adenshillito on 2020-01-11 23:24:09

Ok. Didn't know you'd come from Greenock yourself, I thought your ancestors had come to Australia rather than you personally. Understood.

by sheenamac on 2020-01-11 23:25:30

Absolutely, a Greenock girl. I know Inverkip Street very well.

by adenshillito on 2020-01-11 23:27:22

Most of the people I talk to out here are, like me, four or five generations removed from Greenock so interesting to come across someone directly from the place.

by sheenamac on 2020-11-23 01:35:31

If you haven't done so already, you might like to have a look at my tree on Ancestry - Sheena March 2017. I've traced my McLarens back to 1755 in Scotland.
