I'm trying to find out if our family name can be traced back to Ireland. It may have been changed to Tobey when my family arrived in this country. I believe we came from Kilkenny. If any one has a starting point please help me. This is all new to me and I really have no info.

Related Surnames:
TOBEY

Dear 'mtobey'...Hi there. Need more information to be able to assist.

What country are you speaking of? This site is frequented by members worldwide, not just America.

With genealogy/family tree research, you just start with yourself and work backwards, it's as simple as that. Being careful to document all your information and sources so you don't have to repeat yourself perhaps years later down the track.

Do you know the name of your first generation immigrant ancestor? If not, what was your grandparents' names (if they have passed on), or your great grandparents names and their children. Remember to protect the privacy of the living. Any dates? Locations? Years even?

How are you going to store your family tree data? It is something everyone should think of because it is incredible how much info one can accumulate. And it is a worthwhile hobby.

I'll see what info I can dig up on the TOBEY surname and all spelling variations.

My CANTWELL ancestors came from Co.Kilkenny, Ireland and there are lots of Kilkenny messageboards etc if you search for that surname.

Kind regards,
