Willem Daniël Basson was born in the Cape, South Africa on 4 January 1902 and married Constance Mary Green (born 14 February 1903). Their first son, John David Basson, was born on 6 December 1922. I want to know more about their ancestors.

Dear Johan Basson,
I have just seen your plea about wanting to know more about Catherina Neyhoff who was my great great grand mother. She had an illegitamate son called James MacLachlan as he was the son of Philip McLachlan. These facts have not come out because people still shy away from illegitamacy and especially so in the 19th century. Poor James, who married Grietze Rutgers had five children, amongst whom was my Grandfather, the Bishop of Claremont, Cape Town, South |Africa. He loved preaching and became a missionary in the enterior until he eventually left South Africa for London, where he met and married Marion Lily Adcock on 16th Jan 1881.
Andries Carel McLaglen's names were spelt differently because they were made so by Dutch South African clerks. His real name and all his siblings should have been "MacLachlan" and his Christian names are tranlated as Andrew Charles.
His siblings were all James's children with the sirnames McLaglen or MacLachlan: Catherine Cornelius, Jan Krijn Rutgers; Cornelia Catherine; Jan Jacobus Petrus; Andries Carel Albertus; and Robert Hendrick. I know that Robert became a bu6tcher and had a shop in Rhodesia which became Zimbabwe. One daughter married into the De Beer family but it was short lived. Catherine Cornelia lived with the Bishops's family in Gunnersbury in a house called "Roma" and she was called Auntie Catie. She stayed until she died of old age.The house was named after my cousin Roma who was Umcle Fred's daughter who dieted as she wanted to become a model. She caught pnemonia and died in her teens.Uncle Fred was the first of the Bishops's offspring and died from his wounds and Blackwater fever in the Great War in 1917.
Andrew came to the UK in 1879and married in 1881. I have visited Marion's house off the Mile End Road in Lichfield Street. Andries studied in Tunbridge Wells as Clerk in Orders.
Hope this helps a little.
I have visited the sites where all the McLaglens or MacLachlans lived but most of them are either exposed basements ot sky scrapers as the Cape Towners do not like to keep their historic buildings.

I wrote this ages ago. It is now Oct 2010, Johan. I was excited to hear from you but heard no more. I have not been on this site for ages for many reasons to do with my family, relatives passing away and accidents, and births etc. Please confer with me. I am also on facebook. I was interested in Catherina because I think that she was a facinating person. I got little hints from my father, Clifford McLaglen who was an actor of the silver screen. Have you found anything else? I think that her descendants might have gone to New York but I am not certain. If she did continue with James MacLachlan to China, she might have gone eventually to the USA and to New York. What have you found?

Hi Cynthia! Apologies for not responding earlier. My family research has been erratic and has floed from one part of the family to the other. I was interested in Christina Catharina Nijhof (born 2 August 1768), who married Francois Joseph L'Amour de Manille 0n 17 May 1795 in South Africa. Christina Catharina was my grandmother's great-great grandmother. They were the firts De Manille's (later spelt De Manielle) in South Africa. Please indicate whether this is the ame person as your great-great grandmother. Then we can start sharing some information. Kind regards, Johan.
