Norman Mackay (MacKay/McKay) married Helen Walker at St Cuthberts church, Edinburgh 1852 and are my great great grandparents from Scotland who emigrated to Australia arriving Brisbane 10/4/1862 along with children Alexander, John & Isabella. Helen was pregnant on the ship/voyage as soon after arriving in Brisbane had fourth child (My Great grandfather) William Elijah Mackay July 1862. The whole family were in Victoria it seems by about 1869 but were possibly in NSW prior to getting to Vic. Norman was listed as a 'bookseller' on records after arriving in Australia as he had been listed in Scotland, however other 'possible' records show a family of the same names going to Canada but that Norman is listed as a 'gas fitter'. The shipping records to Australia have Norman as a 'laborer' & 'English' yet on all other records as 'Scottish'. So far it seems clear Norman was born in Scotland, looking like Farr Sutherland. Norman and or Helen (probably both) were of Gaelic tongue as they had a Gaelic speaking minister brought in to St Cuthberts to perform their marriage as stated on their records.
The family had their children as follows:
Alexander in Edinburgh Scotland 1854, the family then travelled to America/Canada and I believe (although not found his birth record as yet) that John was possibly born Halifax Nova Scotia 1857/8, family then returned to Scotland and had Isabella Oct 2nd 1860 at the 'Storm Yacht' Hotel (New or Kew Pier) Aberdeen Scotland, (as stated on her birth record.) The owner of the Hotel was also an Alexander Mackay who apparently died there in 1863 but Im not sure if this Alexander was Normans Father, brother, uncle or another relative etc cousin?? Yet to confirm this Alexander etc.
I have no details on Norman's parents to date and am still working on that. Helen's father was Alexander Walker from Montrose Angus Scotland. He worked at the flax mill part time as a manager at Montrose he is listed on Norman and Helen's marriage record from St Cuthberts Edinburgh 1852. Norman is listed as a 'shop porter' and both of 'that parish' (
When they finally emigrated to Australia, Norman is consistently listed as Bookseller and or newsagency and is found between 1869 to 1875 in Victoria but then seems to disappear from then onwards. I can find no record of a death that fits his dates etc. It seems by other documents that Norman and Helen did not stay together in Victoria, the family is listed as residing in Bullengarook Victoria & has references to the children etc and then looks like they moved back into suburbia Prahran Melbourne where Helen later passed away in 1895 (Buried St Kilda Cemetery Vic)
