wow, I saw that photo and thought how "Wellington" it looks, or even the Hutt or Petone. Guess all early NZ houses looked much like this!!
... memories :)

Heck

Downer street Lower Hutt, i can't figure how to add more, each time i do it erases the first one.

ngairedith

AH! it was the Hutt :), yes, we can only add one photo at a time
you're not talking about Alfred Walter Rudman are you? I know his mother lived (and died in Petone). Who lived in Downer street?

Heck

This is one generation on George Edwin Rudman and Hetty nee Haywood, George was the son of Henry, Alfred's brother.Henry and alfreds mother and father were Elizabeth nee Mathews and Charles Smith who arrived on the Phoebe in 1835.

ngairedith

the children of George Edwin & Hetty were:
1899 - Lillian May Rudman (born 9 Sep 1899)
1901 - Roy Clifford Rudman (born 30 March 1901)
1903 - Ruby Constance Pearl Rudman (born 12 April 1903)
1905 - Florence Ida Rudman (born 29 March 1905)
1907 - Grace Evelyn Rudman (born 29 March 1907)
1908 - Norman George Rudman (born 25 August 1908)

so, IF the babe in arms is Grace Evelyn Rudman she would be about 8-9 months (I'm not good at ages, but close enough for this exercis), this then means the photo was taken about Dec 1907) and the children left to right would be:

  • Florence Ida Rudman, aged about 2.9
  • Roy Clifford Rudman, aged about 6.9
  • Ruby Constance Pearl Rudman, aged about 4.8
  • Lillian May Rudman, aged about 8.3

and the next child, Norman George Rudman is about 8 months from being born :)

Hi Ngaire,
I was hoping someone would think that, i have been the same frame of mind but no one is around anymore to put me right, Norman was my dad.
It's good to have the photos but i have learn t from the exercise that we should always write on the back who are in them, it gets so damn frustrating trying to track down family after family over such a long period to see if they can shed light on things and when you see a photo you have to think if it's just family in them or not.The other named one i have posted has about 700 kids sitting on the porch god only knows who they belong to.
But thank you so much for your time and trouble that you went to, i do appreciate it.
Cheers
Laurie

I just stumbled on this site while searching for the Rudman Family Crest. My name is Judy McGhie and I am the youngest daughter of Nolan and Daphne McGhie. Daphne was George and Hetty's youngest. I did some research about 17 years ago with my oldest daughter, Natasha. We hit too may brick walls and gave up after a while.
It's difficult being the youngest and trying to navigate through history. Nolan and Daphne are both buried at Taita Lawn. The last I saw Aunty Alwyn she came to visit when we were living in Levin. I have a photo of her and my son.
