Thanks for the info, Annie Irene might have been a daughter! I see that the Qld BDM has Edward Charles Taylor in his marriage registation as Charles Taylor 1883/C1418.
thanks everyone for your help. I've got their details from their marriage to now and their children - it is prior to that where the difficulty is. Edward Charles Tayler and Annie moved to Geelong after the death of their child Maud Kate in Rockhampton QLD, where the rest of their children were born. Interesting that you found his parents names Janilye, I don't think that they came to Australia - can't find any record of them in Troy, New York, USA either. Sometimes his mother is on certs as Ellen/Helen Wells/Wills. William his father was supposed to have been a General in the US Army! The Tayler/Taylor bit makes it difficult. Edward was supposed to have come out for Cobb & Co. Not sure why Annie Pugsley came. She is quite elusive too. Supposed to have come from Gloucester (b. 1859) You'd think a name like Pugsley would be easy. (can only find one Annie Census record that is a possibility. Her parents were James Pugsley (Railway Station Master) and Mary Deacon thanks again. Su
I just wrote that story about Charles Pugsley and now I find another Pugsley who was hit by a tram in Bendigo and then another killed by a chinaman. Hell! the Pugsley's didn't have much luck. I'll try and find your Pugsley's for you. As far as Cobb & Co goes I did have a list of Cobb&Co workers but it was all over the place because it seems no one lasted too long in the job. Their drivers seemed to join the company just to get to their own destination and up and leave. Then someone else would grab the reins till it suited them. If he was working for them in an official capacity his name should be on record somewhere. Where? I don't know..Maybe Toowoomba Qld.
I was just thinking. Adams Express was an American Freight company in California and when they sent out Mowton and Freeman Cobb in 1853 to start up in Australia they began in Bendigo around the gold fields. So if your man came over with them it makes sense. The timeline is right even with Cobb & Co going up to Queensland in the 1870s. and Tayler marrying up there. I do have a couple of ancestors that robbed Cobb % Co. a few times but they didn't get the driver's name.
No it doesn't make sense Edward came with them he would have been too young. Unless his father came over. Edward could have come when they started up in Qld
Edward Charles TAYLER (aka Charles Tayler) was born in Troy, New York - Was a son of William H. Y. Tayler & Ellen H. Wells - He jumped ship in Queensland (but gives no date) - He & Annie Pugsley married 8 March 1883 in Rockhampton - He was a Watchmaker in Weller St, Geelong in 1899 - He died 19 May 1919 in Geelong
thanks Janilye and ngaredith. I've been looking for a long time for the Pugsley's and the Tayler's - pre marriage! That post on cousin connect is me...way back in 2007...and I still haven't solved it! Edward Charles Tayler was born in around 1841-45. (Watchman not Watchmaker - worked on the wharf at Geelong). I just read a terrific book on Cobb & Co in Australia - "Wild Ride". I was told he jumped ship in QLD...But he may not have.
I just found a rather curious thing in The Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld. : 1878-1954) the issue is of Saturday 10 October 1885 and it relates the story of Charles Pugsley and the Accident the heading begins:=
ThE following paragraph seems to deserve the particular attention of the corporation of North Rockhampton :-The Sydney Banco Court last week was occupied with tbe trial of an action brought by Mrs. Martha Pugslcy against the Commissioner for Railways, toFix this text recover compensation for the death of her husband, Châties Pugsley, who was killed in November last on the Botany tram line. etc. So it would seem Charles PUgsley's family had some connection with Rockhampton where Annie married Edward. I believe the Rockhampton Corporation was the name they used for the council
Has anyone seen a list of cab drivers for Rockhampton Qld Australia or Americans living in that area? It seems that a Charles (Charlie) TaylEr was the secretary of the Cab Drivers Association there - found in the Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld. : 1878-1954) on Trove. My Edward Charles Tayler was definitely in Rockhampton 1883-1889 - maybe longer (no immigration found) and on his marriage cert he was a Cab Driver. Charlie Taylor according to the paper was a "good careful driver" working for J. Morrissey's Coaches (Yeppoon to Rockhampton) at the same time my ancestor was there. Sounds promising!
It does. I saw that in the paper. Ask Rockhampton Historical Society about Morrisseys.I think Morrissey had something to do with mining up there too. Address: Rockhampton & District Historical Society PO Box 169, Rockhampton 4700 Phone: 07 4927 8431
Try looking for his parent's William and Helen's immigration. Perhaps he arrived with them. I certainly cannot find an arrival for Charles Edward.
