• Benjamin was a son of John Spear & Elizabeth Ann Harris of Cornwall, England

- married Laura Jane SEON (1860-) in 1884 in NZ

• Laura was born 16 Feb 1860 in Polar, London, 1 of at least 11 children of Thomas Seon (1819-1886) & Sophia Murrell (1828-1899), the last 8 born in NZ. Her father Thomas was born in Bermuda and died in Hikianga, NZ. Her mother Sophia was born in Attleborough, Norfolk and died in Auckland

* In 1886, Benjamin was in Melbourne, starting up a business as a wheelwrights, coachbuilder & blacksmith, in Rae street, North Fitzroy. He later took in a partner, Alfred Grigg. That parterneship was dissolved in 1889 and he again went into partnership with Robert Hutchison, trading as Spear, Hutchinson and Co. That also ended when Robert took Benjamin to court for embezzling the company. He was on the Gippsland, Victoria Electoral Rolls until 1924. Son Reuben married in NZ, see below

• Lily was 1 of 2 children of George James Hailes (1854-1929) & Mary Leonard (1848-1928) who were married in 1879 in Upper Takaka. Her brother, Edward George Hailes (1880-1880), died aged 4 months

they had a son in Wellington, Leo George Spear (a combination of her parents names), on 14 May 1914. Leo died the following day and is buried Plot 50G, ROM CATH at Karori

• Reuben served in WWI as Quartermaster Sergeant 27973 with the 19th Reinforcements, J Company, NZEF. He enlisted from Wellington in 1916 where he was a Postal WOrker. His next of kin was his wife Lillian at 7 Chilka Street, Berhampore, Wellington

Lillian died 26 June 1948 aged 65 and is buried Plot 17B, ROM CATH2 at Karori

Reuben was born 22 Nov 1885 in NZ, the son of Benjamin John Spry Spear & Laura Jane Seon from Cornwall, England
- he married Nellie Lilian BROOME (1900-1980) in 1924
Nellie was a daughter of David Broome & Lilly Smith

• Reuben died 6 Nov 1969, aged 83 in Auckland and is buried Area N, Lot 38, in Otahuhu
• Nellie died 17 Nov 1980 and was cremated at Purewa
