Mataatua Canoe Captain Toroa
edmondsallan - Good Morning - I was answering a question in a journal , in regards to the " Tuhoe ' people. I thought that others may be interested to learn about another one of our original settlers .
When the " Mataatua " canoe arrived at the Bay of Plenty , near the mouth of the Whakatane River , they found another tribe already there. The " Te - Hapu " The captain of the canoe was " Toroa ".
Among the crew were - His 1/2 brother who was a Tohunga, his younger brother - " Puhi " HIs sister - " Muriwai "- His son " Ruaihona "
and daughter " Waikara " Also established there were the
" Ngai Turanga " The new arrivals and their decendants married into these older established tribes. After several generations they moved inward following the Whakatane River to its head -land basin near
" Ruatoki" This Tribe became the " Tuhoe " peoples as we know today . " Tuhoe " was the Grandson of " Toroa " . He married " Paewhiti " Who was part Ngai Turanga & part " Mataatua " descent . With " Tuhoe " were his two ( 2 ) elder brothers - " Ue-imua and Tanemoeahi " and sister - " Uneuku - rauri " These people were the originals of the "Tuhoe " tribe to settle in the area now known as Tuhoe in the Te Urewera National Park .
" Tuhoe " - m - " Potiki " and occupied the Main Pa and "Tanemoeahi"
the " Te Putiki Pa and "Oe-imua " resided at the " Kaka- Tarahae Pa
After a while squabbling & fighting broke out among themselves Even after they had been fighting some of the European invaders . In the tribal fighting among themselves. _ " Ue-imua" threatened to kill " Tuhoe " and eat his heart . They fought and " Tuhoe " won and eat " Ue - imua's " heart and in doing so, aquired the " Mana " of his Elder Brother . Eventually ,tired of fighting , " Tuhoe & Potiki " travelled northward and lived for a time at " Ngongtaha " Rotorua near a spring which was called " Te -Puna -a-Tuhoe " today known as
" Fairy Springs ". Later on " Tuhoe " shifted to " Kawhia " on the west coast and I believe that is where he died . - Till we meet again - Regards - edmondsallan
