McLellan from Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland

Journal by jenlynn97

Hello.
My mother is a McLellan. She was born in Coatbride, Scotland. I know a lot about her mother's family (Blades) but not a lot about my grandfather's family (McLellan). I know my grandfather's name was John Newton McLellan and he was born in Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland. He had four brothers (I think one was named George, one Robert and one Neal - I have met Neal and Robert). Grandpa was born in 1928 and died in 2002. I do not have any information on his father, not even a first name. I will ask my mother, but I believe she doesn't remember because she moved to the states when she was 5 and I believe her grandfather was dead by this time. She only remembers visiting her grandmother (named Margaret) when she was 12.
Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Jenlynn,
My last name is McLellan and my family is from Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland. My grandfather William McLellan (b. 1896), moved to New York in 1918. His mother Mary was still living at 84 Montague Street, Rothesay at the time. His father's name was Thomas McLellan (b. 1866). He was a blacksmith. Thomas's father was also named Thomas(b. 1841). He had five children with his wife Marion. They lived at 75 High St. Rothesay, Isle of Bute. He was a miller. There are McLellans that go back to the 1600's at Rothesay. Being a rather small place, I would imagine a connection through cousins and uncles somewhere along the line. Amazingly, even with such a long time on the island, the sirname McLellan is not as common as one might think.

I will continue to search for more information concerning the sirname. I would be interested in your findings too if you wouldn't mind sharing.

Sincerely,
Kevin McLellan

The Thomas McLellan (1) (b circa 1837)who married Marion Bone on 10/12/1857 had 4 sons:-
John Howard McLellan b 9/8/1859
Quintin Bone McLellan b 14/7/1861
Thomas McLellan (2) b 5/1/1864 (This Thomas was a miller and lived at 75 High St from 1880)
Dugald McLellan b 13/10/1868

Thomas McLellan (2) married Mary and had a son called Thomas(3)circa 1890 I have not yet researched further children of Thomas McLellan (2)but can say that Thomas (1) assumed the maiden name of his mother Margaret McLellan (b 7/4/1811 in West Kilbride) whose father was William McLellan b circa 1788.

For further authentication the best route is online to "Scotland's People" where you can view certificates of birth (if registered), census, marriage and death. There are also valuation rolls and Bute post office directories from which I have found valuable information.

Regards

I am the daughter of John McLellan. He was born in Rothsey. He had 4 older brothers - George, Neil, David and Robert. His parents names were Neil and Margaret (Gallagher). I know very little about his family, as I came to USA when I was 5. His parents, my grandparents were both deceased when I was still very young - around 2. I would like very much to learn about his brothers and there families. My Uncle Robert just passed away a few days ago at the age of 93. He and his wife, also a Margaret, never had any children.

Please contact me if you know anything about this side of my family. scotchlass40@yahoo.com
