Moore, William Ezra, Australia

Query by bjHART

I am researching the Moore family. I notice that on different trees he has different mothers listed. How do I determine which is the correct one? I am told his birth is not listed in SA BDM. I thought someone out there might have some further info. His father was Ezra Anthony Moore. Thanks V

Thank you for your swift reply. I have been looking through names this afternoon. William Ezra was born 1865 at Canowie.SA. I have read before that Edward Anthony was his father, but the only one with this name that I can find was born in 1866.Because apparently there is no birth certificate, makes it a bit hard. I have Ellen Smith down as his mother, but I have also seen Mary Stone listed. There were so many mixed up families, some things are really hard to work out. Thanks V

Checking through names, I have that he married Bessie McKay , as you have, then I have him marrying Alice Eliza Lines in 1899. This name must be right as I have notes from family source saying that she was daughter of John Thomas Lines and Eliza Jane Winders. Maybe a spelling error along the way!?

Burra Record (SA) Wednesday 17 January 1912

The family of Mr. W. E. Moore, of Kooringa, had a sad experience shortly
after midnight of Friday, when Mr. Moore died somewhat suddenly.
It seems that deceased was at work on the previous day (he being employed as
trolly driver for Mr. F. Robertson, of Aberdeen) and in the evening he
attended a meeting at the Institute, after which he went home in his usual
health, and retired to rest. Shortly after 1 o'clock he was in the act
of getting up to attend to one of his children, when he fell backwards
on the bed and began to bleed at the mouth. The doctor was sent for,
but deceased died at about 5 o'clock.
He was only a young man, and he leaves a widow and several young children.
The funeral took place at Kooringa on Sunday afternoon.

Burra Record (SA) Wednesday 24 January 1912
A public meeting (in the Council Chamber at 8 o'clock) is called
by His Worship the Mayor (John McLaren, Esq.) to take into
consideration the best method of raising funds for the widow
and family of the late Mr W. E. Moore.

Burra Record (SA) Wednesday 31 January 1912
Helping The Needy

His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. McLaren) invited residents to the
Council Chamber on Wednesday night to discuss the best means of
giving some assistance to Mrs. Moore, wife of the late W. E.Moore,
who had died somewhat suddenly a few days ago, leaving
her and a large family of children quite unprovided for.
His Worship presided, and reported that several residents had
started lists, and had been busy getting subscriptions.
Mr F. Harris reported L20, Messrs T. Geach L5, Smith
L3, and Turley about L5. Messrs. J. McLaren, Rev. J. H. Nield,
ensign Dawson, Cr. E. J Harris, J.Wise, W. H. Hardy, Frank Harris
and T. W. Wilkinson were appointed a committee to arrange for
subscriptions. It was decided to appoint the Mayoress (Mrs J. McLaren)
with Mrs. C. C. Williams to see to the woman's immediate needs.
It was decided to open an account in the Savings Bank in the name of
the Mayor and Mr F. Harris. Mr E. J. Harris was appointed secretary to the fund.
The Mayor was appointed to see to the matter of securing relief at once.
Several of the local business people, on whose books Mr Moore's name appeared, decided to forego all amounts due.

Ezra Anthony Moore 1829-1912.
part of the above notice was missing.
Ezra Anthony Moore was a wheelwright by trade and employed at Canowie and Hallet.
Some of his children were Lavinia, Agnes, Alice, Harriet
Although the marriage register states Mary Ann Stone was 15 according to her mother her age was 13.

South Australian Weekly Chronicle (Adelaide, SA) Saturday 19 October 1861

(Before Messrs. B. F. Laurie, S.M., and J. Hindmarsh, J.P.)
Marriage Act.
Ezra alias Anthony Moore, was charged by Police-trooper Toole with wilfully making a false declaration respecting the age of Mary Ann Stone, before the Rev. J. Roberts, Goolwa, in order to procure marriage, she being a minor, under the age of 21; and also with having declared that he had obtained the consent of the parents to his
marriage with her. Rev. John Roberts was first examined. He said the declaration made before him was in writing.
(The declaration was read, from which it appeared the consent of
the father had been obtained.)
By the Bench— 'Do you maintain that the consent of the father of Mary Ann Stone
had been obtained?'
Mr. Roberts— 'Never said it was.'
By Mr. Laurie— 'I understand you to state distinctly that
the father did not give his consent, but you thought there
would be no objection. 'Now, were you aware that the con
sent of the parents had been given?"
Mr. Roberts declined answering that question ; but had every reason to believe
that the consent of the father had been properly obtained.
Mary Louisa Buckley, the mother, examined— Mary Ann
Stone's father lives at Port Adelaide. Was not
aware that he had consented to this marriage.
Was not living with Mr. Stone. Had not seen him for
years. Mary Ann Stone was born in lawful wedlock. Had
been divorced from Stone, but retained the guardianship of
the child and had always kept her. Did not consider that
the child's grandmother had a right to sanction the marriage.
Had never been asked to give her consent. Was perfectly ignorant of
it until it was done. Her daughter was born in 1848 and is 13 years of age.
The witness here stated to the Bench that, she would now give her consent.
Mr. Laurie could not compromise the matter now, as the prior acts were an offence to good manners and decency. The case was adjourned till Monday, the 21st inst.

South Australian Register (Adelaide, SA)Tuesday 29 October 1861
The Local Court-House was crowded on Monday
during the preliminary investigation of a charge
brought against a man named Ezra Anthony
Moore, a whaler of Encounter Bay, for making a
false declaration, by which a marriage was celebrated between himself
and a child named Mary Ann Stone, aged 13 years. The case has excited a
great deal of interest, and the particulars, as soon as the case is disposed of,
will follow in my next.
The South Australian Advertiser (Adelaide, SA) Saturday 30 November 1861

Ezra Anthony Moore was indicted for committing wilful
and corrupt perjury on the occasion of his marriage with
his wife. Mary Ann Stone, a young female only 15 years of
age, by making a declaration to the officiating minister, the
Rev. Mr. Roberts, at Goolwa, that he had tue consent of
the girl's father to such marriage.
The evidence did not support the indictment, and the accused was discharged.
