We have a Thomas MORRIS (labourer) as father on marriage cert for Clara MORRIS, who marries Edward James RICHES 20/04/1908 in Darnall, Sheffield.
Clara goes on to have two sons and a daughter and their lines track to present.
Her dates are: 1882-1966(died Feb).

The mystery for us as of right now is: Who was Thomas' wife? - It'd be so cool to track her since that'd be the full set of great-great-grandparents for my Mum.

Hi

I had a look at Clara and Edward on the 1911 England census and her place of birth was shown as West Bromwich, Staffordshire abt 1882.

Searching further records for Clara born West Bromwich with father named Thomas I came up with one result in 1891 census which gave Ann Elizabeth as the wife/mother born about 1852 in Rowley, Staffordshire, England.

I could only find one marriage for a Thomas and Annie Elizabeth in Sheffield which took place in Dec 1871 and gave her maiden name as ELINORE.

However on looking for the birth of Ann Elizabeth in Rowley, Staffordshire there was only one which fitted which was in 1851 but the surname was transcribed as ELMOR.

I am able to follow Ann Elizabeth through the 1861, 71 census' but spelt as ELMORE.

Hope this helps in your research

That is really great, I'll have a look into it.

Thanks a million!

You say Thomas was a labourer on the marriage Cert, on both these census he is a skilled craftsman, is it the same family ? was Thomas listed as deceased on the marriage cert ?

Ironmakers of the late Middle Ages also learned how to transform cast pig iron into the more useful wrought iron by oxidizing excess carbon out of the pig iron in a charcoal furnace called a finery. After 1784, pig iron was refined in a puddling furnace (developed by the Englishman Henry Cort). The puddling furnace required the stirring of the molten metal, kept separate from the charcoal fire, through an aperture by a highly skilled craftsman called a puddler; this exposed the metal evenly to the heat and combustion gases in the furnace so that the carbon could be oxidized out. As the carbon content decreases, the melting point rises, causing semi-solid bits of iron to appear in the liquid mass. The puddler would gather these in a single mass and work them under a forge hammer, and then the hot wrought iron would be run through rollers (in rolling mills) to form flat iron sheets or rails; slitting mills cut wrought iron sheets into narrow strips for making nails.

On the 1881 Census it lists Clara as under one month, so she was born in March 1881 as Census taken 3 April 1881.

You guys are brilliant - all of this is going to be really useful.

I had a wee look over Clara's page in my notes. We seem to have her down in Mum's info (so probably from my maternal grandmother's diaries) as being a February birthday.

The differing spellings make a lot of sense too.

Thanks so much!
