My Great Grandma Kathleen Helen Casey Born Around 1900 IN Ballarat Vic was Put Into an Orphanage Im Not Sure Whether Her Parents Put Her Into One...
Kathleen had a sister, Veronica as well and i'm sure there are other siblings. Her parents were William Casey (baker) and Helen Murphy, both died within a few weeks of each other. Im just wanting to know what Orphanage Kathleen was sent to, again i'm not sure whether it was in Victoria or Western Australia.
KATHLEEN HELEN CASEY
BORN - AROUND 1900
LOCATION - BALLARAT VICTORIA
MARRIED - ROY RUPERT MANZIE 1940
PARENTS - WILLIAM CASEY AND HELEN MURPHY

Could this be Kathleen's birth?
It's the only possible birth I can locate in the Victorian records with the details you provided.
Name: Catherine Ellen CASEY.
Birth year: 1897.
Birth place: Ballarat, Victoria.
Father: William CASEY.
Mother: Ellen MURPHY.
Ref: Registry of Births, Victoria. Reg. #16283.
It is likely she was born in Ballaarat before 1900.
someone else in here will be able to give you a Victorian birth reg. (probably tonkin}
If she was born in Ballaarat contact Child and Family Services actually contact them anyway they know all about the orphanage records.
Veronica was born in Boulder W.A. in 1900
W.A BDM. BIRTHS
Casey Veronica
William
Murphy Ellen Boulder 863 1900
Then there was

Casey Patricia Anastasia
William

Casey Robert Patrick

Now, if you note this letter written in 1909, it appears the family were in trouble then and possibly this is when the child/children were taken into care.

A DISTRESSING CASE.
To the Editor.
Sir,
We, the undersigned, beg to bring under the notice of the charitably disposed, through the medium of your
columns, a very pathetic and truly deserving case. There is a family of six children, mother and father, by the name of Casey residing at 447 William street, Perth. The father has been in the Perth Public Hospital for the last six months suffering from consumption,
and has left that institution as "incurable."
The eldest of the children is 13½ years, and the father, though willing to accept any work, is physically unfit to do it. The family is, therefore,
practically destitute, subsisting solely
on the kindness of the Bakers' Union, their neighbours, and Government assistance given through Mr. Longmore.
We respectfully and earnestly ask you to be
generous enough to receive any donations
on behalf of this helpless family.-Yours,
etc.
L. J. SMYTH, The Palace, Perth.
H. MACPHERSON, secretary Bakers' Union.
GEORGE S. REYNOLDS, grocer.
Perth, September 16.
[Donations sent to us in response to
the appeal of our correspondents will be
gladly acknowledged.-Ed.]

The funeral of the late Mr. William Casey,
baker, of William-street, Perth, took place
on Saturday morning, and was largely at-
tended. The deceased was born at Ballarat,
Victoria, and came to this State 11 years
ago. The cortege moved from Messrs. Bowra
and O'Dea's private mortuary, in Pier-street,
and proceeded to the Roman Cathlolic Ceme-
tery at Karrakatta, where the remains were
interred, the Rev. Father Griffin conducting
the religious service.The chief mourners
were -Master William Casey (son), Mrs. H.
Sheppard' (mother-in-law), and Mr. J. Sheppard (brother-in-law). - The pall-bearers
were Messrs. A. Heloise, W Stent (representing the Operative Coastal Bakers' Union), R. W. Cooper, and J. Sheppard. Many handsome wreaths were sent by friends. The funeral arrangements were carried out by
Messrs. Bowra and O'Dea.
NOTE: the in-laws' name is SHEPHERD was Murphy nellie's name by a previous marriage? Perhaps William Casey was not your great grandmother's father!
Do you have a birth certificate for your great grandmother? You need a marriage year for Casey and Murphy.
According to Karrakatta Cemetery records Nellie was buried as Nellie Casey age 33 and William was 43.
Sorry about the bold type!
Thanks Tonkin knew you would help. - do you see a marriage around that time for a 'shepherd' or a Murphy.
those in-laws have me puzzled.
Come to think of it Shepherd might be the mother-in-law's second marriage. but then there's the brother-in-law.
(not thinking straight today)
MARRIAGE.
Groom: William CASEY.
Birth place: Given as Illabarook.
Bride: Ellen Murphy.
Birth place: Given as Dereel.
Year married: 1894.
Place: Victoria.
Ref: Registry of Marriages, Victoria. Reg. #12493.
Sorry nosborne I gave you the wrong registration number for William and Ellen's marriage above and the correct registration is #5934.
Thank you both for all your help. Kathleens birthday could well be 1897, I have her marriage cert to Roy Rupert Manzie in 1940 and she has her age as 38 but somewhere along the line this could have been mixed up.
Tonkin, I have been in contact with someone on Ancestry and they have also told me that Kathleen's name was actually Catherine which makes things a little more confusing.
Janilye, the article in the Western Aust sounds about right. All the information that you have collected sounds like the Casey family i am trying to figure out whether I am a part of.
After talking to my Mum last night she said that Veronica Casey had a daughter named Wendy, I have had a look but have not come across anything as yet. She said that if we were to find that information we would know that it is the correct Casey family.
I will check out Child and Family sercives Janilye.
You guys have been great, thanks.
Okay I have your proof.
If you look at Karrakatta Cemetery search you will see a William George Casey died in 1940

Now Here are the Death Notices
William George Casey
All the siblings are listed -Patricia,
Josephine, Veronica, Kathleen and Robert.
Kathleen which is what she called herself and William George who died at 45, must have both been born in Victoria.
These notices show that they all kept in touch.
If you move down the paper to the funeral notices you will see he belonged to the 11th.Battalion Assoc.
These are his records use the arrows to turn the pages.

A jockey who enlisted on the 7 August 1915 age 19 yrs and 9 months and fought in France. Lists him as born in Ballaarat both parents deceased, and he lists his grandmother as next of kin. Harriet Shepherd.
Looked for a death for her and couldn't find it but then page 35 there is a letter from her to Base Records and she signed her name SHEPPARD.
Here is her Death
Sheppard Harriet Female
Perth 434 1934
she was 77 when she died and is buried at Karrakatta
so born around 1857.
Yes indeed here is her marriage to SHEPPARD
Sheppard William Male
Murphy Harriet Female
Subiaco 1825 1903
So she was a Murphy !!
Now I can go to bed.
Lets try that again. These are his records use the arrows to turn the pages William George Casey
Harriet SHEPPARD, formerly Murphy, besides Ellen had another daughter named Katie. She married in Perth to Amady DUPUY in 1908 The DUPUY's had a daughter they also named Kathleen, she married Alexander S. G. Watt in Perth in 1931.
Harriet's second husband William SHEPPARD died at Subiaco 25 July 1913 age 56.
Here is Harriet SHEPPARD's funeral notice which only mentions the DUPUY's. Obviously inserted by them. The Casey children were all still alive so I don't know what happened there.
The West Australian Tuesday 13 March 1934
SHEPPARD. On March 11, 1934, at Perth Hospital, Harriet Sheppard, loving mother of Kate (Mrs. Dupuy), grandmother of Kathleen and Vene Amady, Gus, Jean and Harold Dupuy; aged 77 years.
this funeral notice for William SHEPPARD mentions a J MURPHY as a stepson.
and Mrs. P Mansfield as a stepdaughter; so that's a couple more siblings for Ellen.
Janilyne, all your information is great, thanks so much for your help. William George Casey is my Great Grandmas brother. I have been able to clarify that this is the correct Casey family i have been looking for. Thank you so much for your help, i really appreciate it. I'll be here for a while going through all the information that you have found.
Once again thanks
You're most welcome. I think you have enough tools to search with now.
By the way, I think St. Joseph Girls' Orphanage in Subiaco would be the likeliest place to send Kathleen and her sisters.
The best of luck
