It may have been the Rowatts that were connected. The letter states that my great grandmother " Mary Rowatt was formerly Mary McKinley whose brother - William- migrated to America, and his son became a lawyer at Philedelphia and later became a big man in the political life, he was elected President and was assinated."

Any help would be great.

I can find a Mary Rowat ( nee McKinley ) born on 27 may 1814 in Kilsyth, Scotland. She appears on the Scottish 1881 census with her spouse James and also a 7 year old grandson , also named James. She died in 1898 in Cumbernauld , Dunbartonshire.

Thanks Elkama3. This Mary Rowatt was my great great grandmother. It is the connection to the President McKinley's family that I can't work out. Mary did spell her name 'McKinlay' not that that matters. Thanks again for your note.
