edmondsallan - hello " Pautuone Eruere Maili " was the son of
" Tapua ", Leader & Tohunga of Ngati Hao of Hokianga and the elder brother of " Nene ". He was a descendant from "Rahiri " By marriage he was related to many neighbouring Hapu's . Ngati Pou of Whangaroa // & Te Roroa of Hokianga & Kaipara .
" Pautuone " was not a senior chief . " Muriwai & Te Taonui " had more power & influence. Much of his life he tried to preserve peace The year 1828 was a very troubled year for " Pautuone " . his first wife " Te Wheke " died in May . His adult son "Toa " and a younger daughter died in August . Another adult son " Mata " died in October In approximately ( no record ) 1833 he married his second wife
" Takarangi " the sister of the chief " Te Kupenga " of Whakatiwai who had a very large pa near the Hauraki Gulf . He spent a great deal of time among this tribe and for short periods he returned to Hoklanga .In the early 1840's " Pautuone " was trading in many places around the gulf ,including Matiatia on Waiheke Island. Many journals of history have been written around this person. and are available at our libraries .
" Pautuone " died on 19th Sept 1872 . Of his four ( 4 ) wives and nine children , only one son " Hohaia " survived him . His age has b varies from ( ( 96 ) to ( 110 ). He is buried in the cemetery of the Church of the Holy Trinity ( Anglican ) at Devonport, Auckland . nz . The government enclosed the grave with an iron fence and erected a
" Plaque " which reads -- " A warm friend of the Europeans , surporter of the Queen's Laws and Peacemaker ."
