Reverend Richard Taylor 1836 Nz Bound
edmondsallan - hello - I am a little slow getting under way again & the accelerator on me is sticking a little bit , That cheese & onion sammy on the fresh bread ,was to thick . OK , we were up to " Richard Taylor - the rev " leaving England . This farewell in detail -
The " Rev' Taylor ,Caroline & their ( 4 ) children left Gravesend ' England , aboard the " Prince Regent " 18th Feb 1836 . They arrived in Sydney ( Kanga ' Land ) Aussie on 13th June 1836 . The journey was uneventful and lasted 3 months & 23 days . He was met by " Reverend Samuel Marsden " ( Who had big plans for this " religious Boyo"
Taylor went to work immediately as clapaincy at Liverpool . NSW, where his parishoners were mainly from the Military forces & the Prisons . Reverend Samuel Marsden died in 1838 in Sydney , Australia.
Richard & family had been living in a cottage at Parramatta . NSW. when he was released from his present position to take up his original appoinment in the Bay of Islands . NZ. After having done a preliminary visit in March with the Rev'William Williams without his family , once again with his family on the move heading to NZ . He arrived in Sept ' 1839 at the Bay of Islands with all his family and immediately went to " Waimate " ( thats a name that sounds familiar to our " Edmonds Family " ) He took over " Waimate " Parish from the Reverend Octavius Hadfield . The story told or still related ,is - " He wasn't Happy about this out of the way appointment " ( Probably less Monies ) However he did his best and started to set about getting this " parish of waimate " and his family up to a higher level . He also had some idelistic views on the surrounding Maori People and those further a field . On the 20th of Jan 1840 , Taylor purchased an huge tract of land at north cape , now known as
" Te Paki Reserve " and sheep and cattle station from the Kaitaia Chief - " Nopera Pana kareao of Te Rarawa " In his diary he stated this was to return the land to the original owners - TE Aupouri - it being their ancestral lands . ( by the way I have searched for his personnal diary for years , still give it a ramble , even now . I can't find it . all the leads & I still have ,go ( when ever I am down their ,) have followed ,head towards our National library . No success as yet . The land he bought proved to be remote & infertile . and he tried to sell it several times . It was sold after he died at a bargain price . Reverend Richard Taylor also opened a school at Waimate which became a great success. Besides alll his religious work , He wrote journals , Studied Botany in his area , learned to be fluent in The Maori Language , did a lot of scientific work on things around him . Their seem to be no end to this brilliant scholar and his appetite for work - As you can read this person was into a lot of things and some of those things became inter woven in our own heritage . - regards - edmondsallan .
