Hi,
I am putting together the story of how the Roils came to NZ from Alton, Hampshire in 1841. My great grandfather Henry William Roil was in the very early development of Nelson, Marlborough Sounds and Christchurch. He died from tetunus after having one of the first traffic accidents in NZ. Unfortunately his wife was pregnant with twins. One of these was my grandfather. The whole story is intriguing and i am struggling to find information about Alton in 1830 - 1840 era to get an idea on how bad were the conditions that caused the family to split and undertake those frightening emigration journeys.
Would like to know what the story of the Canadian family is.
Hi. The Roils of Newfoundland begin with James Roil ( Ryall ) who was in the British army and was stationed in Carbonear, Conception Bay, Newfoundland.Where he married Georgina Pynn. James was born in 1815 in Holybourne, Hampshire, England. His father and mother were Thomas Roil ( 1788 ) & Sarah Sewry, his parents were Thomas Roil & Mary Scates.
When James left the army he was awarded land in St John,s and was made the court sheriff. I have all the family records. I was givin all of the English Roil information from a John Roil who is a lawyer here in St John's. Another Roil researcher from NZ sent it to him.
Although my name is Ryall, I'm not connected to this family, or at least not here in Newfoundland. I do however have a connection to NZ. A Micheal Royal from Newfoundland settled there in the 1870's. I'm researching him how.

Hi Don,
Thanks for that. I think it was my brother John who sent the English info to the John Roil in St John's. My brother was an engineer and had very good details on who was who. My interest is in bringing these facts to life by understanding the circumstances and characters involved. If anyone has more detail on the British Army outpost at Carbonear and the involvement of James Roil, I would appreciate that. I will put together an overview of our NZ Roil Branch and post it on my profile in the next few days.
