This morning a prisoner named August Schroder, a foreigner, a seaman of the ship Melita, was shot dead while employed in the hard labour gang, by the accidental discharge of the overseer, Mr McCarthy's, rifle. The bullet passed through the heart. Schroder was undergoing a sentence of three months with hard labour for resisting and assaulting the police in the execution of their duty and his time expired next Saturday. He was engaged with others of the gang at some earth-work in Molesworth-street, close to the Galatea Hotel, while the warders were posted high above them, where a paling or fence has been erected at the brink of the excavation. McCarthy had his gun under his arm, with the muzzle depressed, pointing towards he prisoners. By some accident the piece went off and shot Schoroder dead almost instantaneously. He reeled a little, fell and died before he could be removed to the Hospital, where an inquest was held before the Coroner. An inquest was held

"ยข SELIG, Benjamin Aaron 12 May 1872 aged 60
. Hebrew name Binyamin, born in Penzance, Cornwall, son of Aharon Selig (1782-1941) & Hannah Hindele (1779-1847). He married Catherine 'Kate' Jacobs (1820-1914), daughter of Samuel Jacob (1788-1860) & Sarah Levy (1784-1868) and they had children in Penzance & Melbourne. Their 7th child, Phineas Selig (1856-1941), was born in Melbourne and was a Journalist, newspaper editor and manager, sports administrator. He died in Christchurch. In Wellington in 1862, under the leadership of Jacob Joseph, Joseph Edward Nathan thought it necessary to engage a Reader and Shohet and they appointed Benjamin Aaron Selig, then aged 50. However, understandably, in such a small community, Benjamin could not continue his full time job as ritual slaughterer for kosher meat, with his religious duties, nor could he be paid a proper stipend so he occupied himself mainly with his craft of watchmaker and jeweller. Possibly the clash between his responsibility towards his business & family and his responsibility towards his congregation, is what resulted in the sudden termination of his services. In April 1866, the Registrar-General published an unusual public notice to the effect: "It is hereby notified that the name of Benjamin Aaron Selig is withdrawn from the list of Officiating Ministers in the meaning of the Marriage Act, 1854." The severance of his connection with the congregation as an official did not leave it without a Reader as they employed Jacob Frankel from Dunedin.
Wellington Independent, 13 May 1872 SELIG - At his residence, Willis street, on the 12th May, Benjamin A. Selig, in his 60th year, late of Penzance, Cornwall and for some years officiating minister of the Hebrew congregation of this city; deeply respected by a large and numerous circle of friends and relations [Melbourne and home papers please copy].
- Mr Benjamin Aaron Selig, who for many years officiated as reader to the Hebrew congregation was born at Penzance, in the county of Cornwall, in 1812 and for many years led a very unpretending and religious life. In 1854 Mr Selig left his native land for Australia, accompanied by a young family, seeking a larger field for his endeavors. In 1862 he left the Australian shores for a ministerial appointment to the Hebrew congregation of this city and until his death he disseminated kindness and charity as fast as was compatible with his means. He leaves a wife and large family to deplore his sudden death. The deceased had a large circle of Hebrew and Christian friends who will regret the loss of one so upright and genial in disposition.
- His wife Kate died in Sydney 12 Nov 1914 aged 94.

John Slakes married Lucy Clark on 21 July 1833 at Brenchley, Kent. They had a daughter, Sarah Jane 'Sal' Slarks (1834-1899). They had a son John Slarkes in 1837. On the 8 Jan 1841 they sailed from London on the Lord William Bentinck, arriving in Port Nicholson 19 May 1841
* Daughter Sarah married Joseph Hilborne James in St Peter's, Wellington 23 Sep 1865. In Jan 1871 Sarah James, alias Sal Slarks was charged for drunkenness for the 31st time and again sent to prison with hard labor. At times, she & her father were charged together. In Jan 1873 Sarah was sentenced to 3 months hard labor. She died of a stroke aged 64 & buried Karori
* Son John married Martha Burkett (1839-1882). In Feb 1866, his wife Martha, with whom he was not living, and Thomas Nodder, were charged with having committed an assault upon John. He said he had occasion to correct one of their children, when his wife came in and pulled him to the ground and struck him several times on the head with a gutter spike. Nodder came in, knelt down and commenced punching him under the ribs. One night in Aug 1866 Martha was in Mrs Dixon's house in the Wairarapa
Wellington Independent, 11 March 1865 John and Lucy Slarks, an aged couple (52 & 49), were charged with keeping a brothel. The jury returned a verdict of 'Guilty' and his honor's sentence was that John Slarks be imprisoned for two years with hard labor and Lucy Slarks for eighteen months with hard labor. A few days after release Lucy was in front of the judge charged with drunkenness
In June 1872 at about midnight, John was lying dead drunk on the floor of his cottage at Kaiwarra when his neighbour, having been shaken awake by his children, broke into his house through a window to find him lying in the middle of smoke and flames.
NZ Mail, 20 Dec 1873 The other day an old woman (57) named Lucy Slarks came to a sad and untimely end, after a long course of hopeless dissipation. Some men passing along the Hutt road at an early hour in the morning found what at first sight might have been mistaken for a bundle of dirty rags lying on the road side, but on nearer inspection it proved to be the lifeless corpse of a woman, by whose side lay an unfinished bottle of beer. Facts subsequently disclosed show that the unfortunate creature had dissipated her husband's weekly wages in a drunken carouse, had staggered about the road, trying in vain to walk along the Hutt Road to Ngahauranga, every now and then falling, at last falling and striking her head against a stone, never becoming conscious and was found the next morning having died in a fit of apoplexy.
.. 3 weeks later ..
Evening Post, 15 Jan 1874 The body of a man named Slarks was washed ashore at Kaiwarra. The clothes of the unfortunate man have been recognised as belonging to John Slarks, husband of Lucy Slarks, who a few weeks back was picked up dead near the same place. The clothes were identified by a daughter of the deceased. The cause was ruled a suicide probably borne down by grief, consequent upon the melancholy circumstances of the death of his wife.

"ยข SLEIGH, Ralph Edward Alfred 3 Nov 1865 aged 28
. Ralph was drowned in Wellington Harbour when he arrived on the steamer 'ss Phoebe' from Manukau. Nine of the passengers got into a waterman's boat to go ashore. In the boisterous weather, with a gale blowing and very rough seas, the small boat, too small to carry that many with safety, was about half way to the wharf when she was swamped, overturned and went down. Eight managed to stay afloat, Mr Kinnersley, Warden of the Marlborough Goldfields; Mr Houghton of the Post Office Department, Havelock; Mr Beetham and Mr Cooper of Christchurch; Captain Carr, Mr Carr, Mr Hunter and Mr Hook. Captain Sleigh of the 2nd Waikato Regiment was not seen by any of the survivors after the boat sunk. His wife, Marion Jane (nee Kennedy 1843-1906) and their two young children, Stewart Kennedy Sleigh (1864-1950) & Ernest Alfred (1865-) Sleigh, who were accompanying him, were still on board the 'Phoebe'. A rider said .. "it is high time that more efficient regulations were made in regard to watermen's boats in Port Nicholson and that boatmen were prevented from endangering the lives of their passengers for the sake of a few extra shillings."
Wellington Independent, 16 Nov 1865 FUNERAL Of The Late Captain Sleigh - on Tuesday afternoon the mortal remains of Mr Ralph E. Sleigh, late Captain in the 2nd Waikato Militia, were interred in the City burial ground. The body was removed from the Resident magistrate's Court shortly after 4 o'clock and the coffin was received on Lambton Quay by the Wellington Rifle Company at the present. Captain McIntyre, who has been most untiring in his kind offices, followed the corpse as chief mourner and despite the unpleasant afternoon a large number of persons assembled to pay respect to the memory of the unfortunate gentleman. The procession which consisted of the Rifle Company, the corpse and the followers, preceded by the Volunteer Band playing the Dead March, wended it s way slowly down the beach to the Cemetery, where it was met by Colonel Haultain. After the funeral service had been read by the Lord Bishop of Wellington, the corpse was interred with military honors, a party of the Volunteers firing three volleys in the air.
NOTE Marion next married Charles Henry Ellaby in Blenheim in 1874 & had 2 more children; 1875- Charles Albert Edward Ellaby & 1877- Jessie Ridsdale Ellaby. She is buried Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.

. Eva, Isabella & Mary were 3 of 10 children (5 girls) of Edward Smyth (1829-1915) & Isabella Canrick (1846-1926), buried Karori.
Of Note One night in 1901, their two other daughters, Annie Smyth (1878-1942) & Rosamond Jane Smyth (1870-1942) attended a meeting addressed by William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, where Rosamond decided to become a soldier. Annie often accompanied Rosamond when she sold the Army's paper the 'War Cry' and also took part in open-air meetings. Annie never married and served in Japan for 34 years, visiting NZ on furlough for six months every seven years. When, as a brigadier, she reached retirement age, she returned to NZ, leaving Japan 28 Sep 1939. However, her leaders in Japan, with the sanction of international headquarters, recalled her and she went back on 30 March 1940. When the Army was closing down its work she declined to leave, but at the end of 1940 the Japanese authorities told her to go. After arriving 16 Jan 1941, Annie was often seen cycling around the district with her copies of the War Cry. She frequently wore a white dress and a Japanese coolie hat. It was known that she intended to return to Japan when she could. For all her zeal, it was said that her aggressive manner offended many local people. She insisted on further service, telling Commissioner J. Evan Smith to "หSend me to the most difficult place you have got and I'll go gladly'. Smith arranged for her to go to Wairoa with her sister Rosamond, who had become very deaf. On or about 8 Aug 1942 Annie and Rosamond were murdered in their home at the Salvation Army Hall in Wairoa. Thirteen days later, on 21 August, they were found by a neighbour. They were the first of 4 victims, murdered by the serial killer Leo Silvester Hannan. A lengthy and exhaustive enquiry followed, involving a large team of police led by Chief Detective John 'Bruce' Young (1888-1952) of Wellington (later commissioner of police).
Salvation Army Commissioner Smith officiated at the joint funeral for the two sisters held at the citadel in Wellington on 26 August; they were buried at the Karori cemetery .. full story & photos at link. Annie Smyth is remembered as the NZ Salvation Army's first overseas missionary and as one of its most outstanding officers.

. William, Mary & 2 of their daughters, sailed from London on 17 May 1843, arriving in Port Nicholason 12 Sep 1843, on the Ursula. He was employed as warfinger in Wellington, as cashier and collector on the Queen's Wharf for the Wellington Harbour Board and also ran a general store. Spinks Cottage was built by William sometime during the 1850s and is one of the oldest buildings in Wellington. The cottage was sold to the church of St. Johns in 1879 as a home for the church caretaker and later moved to make way for the new church building. It was moved again in 1983 to avoid demolition and is now on Dixon Street. Their family home later became a school run by the Spink sisters.
Evening Post, 9 Dec 1884 SPINKS - On the 1st December at his residence in Willis Street, William Spinks aged 81 years.
- Mr William Spinks, a very old resident here, died rather suddenly this afternoon. An incident in the life of Mr William Spinks, whose death occurred yesterday morning, is worth recording. In 1855, or about twelve years after he had arrived from Great Britain, a great earthquake (magnitude 8.2) took place in Wellington and so afraid were some European settlers that another would occur and destroy their lives and property, that they embarked on board a vessel in harbour with the intention of leaving the district as speedily as possible. The vessel set sail, but had got no further than the Heads before she was wrecked. This catastrophe induced the passengers, amongst whom was Mr Spinks, to reconsider the decision they had come to about leaving the place and it was agreed to return to Wellington, which was accordingly done as soon as circumstances would permit.
Wanganui Herald, 15 Dec 1884 Mrs Spinks, wife of William Spinks who died last week, died this morning.

Colonist, 29 March 1861 The general regard and esteem in which the colony generally and more especially the provinces of Wellington and Hawke's Bay, hold the name and family of Mr St. Hill, requires us not to pass over in silence the death of the head in that family. Mr St Hill senior had attained the great age of 78 and died in full possession of his mental faculties and in Christian peace and hope, after a long live devoted to the public service of her majesty's ordnance department and spent in the West Coast, Ceylon and Hong Kong. In all quarters of the British dominion he has left friends to regret his loss and deeply sympathise with his relatives, especially the absent ones, who will more keenly feel their separation from their aged father at the time of his decease.

She married Walter Vere Stevens (1833-), from Essex, in 1866 & had 4 children, in Auckland, Picton & Thorndon & Tinakori road, Wellington.
Wellington Independent, 6 Nov 1866 STEVENS-BOUGHTON - On November 3, at St Paul's Cathedral, Wellington, New Zealand, by the Rev P. Hay Maxwell, Walter Vere Stevens, Esq., of the Treasury, son of Francis Stevens, Esq., to Emily Anna, second daughter of Adino Boughton, Esq., of Wellington and late of the Stock Exchange, London.
- In 1874 Walter was a Cashier for J. Brogden & Sons in Picton.
- In Aug 1881, Walter was in Auckland when the Matamataharakeke block in Coromandel, excluding the 300 acre reserve which had been declared inalienable by the Native Land Court, was sold to him. He was described on the title as a 'gentleman', for ยฃ921. The sale could not be approved at that time by the trust commissioner under the Native Lands Fraud Prevention Act because successors had yet to be appointed to Nohohau and Paraone. In April 1883 Arama Karaka was appomted Nohohau's successor and Paraone's daughter, Ngapera Te Akau, was appointed his successor. In the meantime Arama, Rangipiki and Ngapera signed another deed selling the block to James Darrow for ยฃ1,100. This sale was approved by the district trust commissioner, who was apparently unaware of the first sale. The matter was investigated by the trust commissioner in Auckland, who subsequently approved the sale to Stevens. A lack of records leaves questions unanswered about these two sales. The Auckland trust commissioner received a letter from Darrow's solicitor protesting against the approval of Walter's purchase and the information was passed on to Walter's lawyer. More of the story with maps showing Matamataharakeke reserve and area sold to Walter

Wairarapa Daily Times, 20 April 1888 . Mr John Stevenson, for many years in the commercial department of the Evening Post, died suddenly this morning, having ruptured a blood vessel. He was passing through the offices when he was seized with a violent fit of coughing, during which he ruptured a blood vessel in the lungs. Every possible measure was taken to afford relief and Dr Henry arrived in a very short time, but was unable to do anything for the unfortunate gentleman who expired about 20 minutes after the occurrence. Mr Stevenson, who was a Tasmanian by birth, was 53 years of age and an old settler in Wellington, having been in the employ of Messrs Blundell Bros (whose brother-in-law he was) for about sixteen years. Deceased had been suffering from asthma for a considerable time. His death will be sincerely regretted by a large number of friends and every sympathy will be felt for the widow and family.

A party of friends who had been on board the harbour-master's yacht at that time, said they saw the yacht with one person on board, apparently fishing, when she suddenly disappeared as if capsized. By the 4th April they feared she had 'gone to the bottom' along with Mr Stevenson. On the 15th April a concert in aid of the Stevenson family took place. A grand demonstration of the Good Templars took place in the afternoon, all the members, headed by the band, marched in procession.

Evening Post,12 Sep 1877
HORRIBLE SUICIDE OF A WOMAN. A painful sensation was created in town to-day by the news that a woman had committed suicide by cutting her body open with a razor, literally ripping herself up. On enquiry this proved to be but too true. It appears that last evening Mr Stinson, who is in the employ of Messrs Barber, butchers, on returning home went to see his wife, who bad been unwell and was lying in bed. To his horror he found the bed covered with blood and her hands deeply dyed with the same, while in one she held a razor also bloody. On turning down the bedclothes, he found a fearful wound on her body evidently self inflicted just below the ribs on the left side. He rushed off instantly for medical aid and Dr Watts of College Street promptly attended, but at once pronounced the case a hopeless one. Dr Watts did all that medical skill could suggest to alleviate the sufferings of the unfortunate woman, but she sank rapidly and expired at an early hour this morning. The deceased had been married 19 years and always lived on the best of terms with her husband. An inquest, of course, will be held, when possibly some further particulars may be available. There are no children (sic, 4 known).
INQUEST An inquest was held at the Caledonian Hotel this afternoon, touching the death of Mrs Stinson. Dr Watts stated that the wound was the cause of death. It was over three inches deep, the liver being cut right through, causing fatal hemorrhage. Deceased told him before her death, when she was quite sensible, that she made the cut herself to relieve the feeling of pain and fullness in her side. Her lungs and heart were much diseased. Mr H. Stinson, husband of the deceased, stated that she had been subject for a long time to delusions, and was somewhat insane at times, although apparently not dangerously so. A verdict of suicide through temporary Insanity was returned.

Evening Post, 1 Jun 1880 A shocking accident occurred in Willis Street this afternoon, at about 2 o'clock, resulting in the almost instantaneous death of a man named Stephen Stockbridge, about 35 years of age, a milkman in the employ of Mr Fitchett, of Fitchett's Farm. It appears that the deceased was driving a cart along the thoroughfare named and when opposite the Te Aro Hotel, suddenly fell off, the wheel passing over his head. He was observed to be sitting rather loosely on the near-side of the cart and it is supposed that he was thrown off by a sudden jerk, caused by the wheel coming in contact with a rut or obstruction in the road. Several persons witnessed the occurrence and at once rushed to the spot. It was then evident that the unfortunate man was dying. His head was found to be completely crushed, the wheel having apparently passed over the cheek and temple. A large pool of blood was lying in the road and the unhappy man was quite unconscious. One or two of the bystanders at once went for medical assistance. In a very few minutes Dr Collins was in attendance, closely followed by Dr Harding. Within 10 minutes after the accident occurred, however, the unfortunate man had breathed his last on the spot where the accident occurred. Sergeant Price was also soon in attendance and the body was removed to the morgue, where it now awaits an inquest.

. daughter of Rev Lewis Pughe of Liverpool, married Robert Stokes (1810-1880) in 1832 in Cheltenham.
On 10 April 1839 he approached the New Zealand Company for a position and was attached to Mein Smith's survey staff. He sailed from London 2 Aug 1839 on the 'Cuba', arriving Port Nicholson on 3 Jan 1840. His wife Margaret arrived 3 weeks later, on the 'Aurora', accompanied by his brother John, 22 Jan 1840.
Robert carried out surveys in Wellington-Hutt Valley district, where he gave his name to Stokes Valley. In Aug 1840 Colonel Wakefield sent him, together with Heaphy and E. J. Wakefield, to report on the potentialities of the Wanganui district for settlement. Early in 1842 Robert resigned from the Company's service in order to enter business on his own account. He visited South America in 1843, but returned to Wellington in time to join Petre and Clifford as founders of the NZ Spectator and Cook's Straits Guardian. He represented Wellington City in the Provincial Council from 1857 to 1865 and Wairarapa East from then until 1867. In 1858 he carried a Bill through the Council to establish municipal government for Wellington and, in the same year, advocated the construction of a railway across the Rimutaka Range. From 1871-1878 he was a member of the Senate of the University of NZ. In 1878, in his late sixties, he returned to England and on 19 Sep that year married Jane Rutherford, daughter of the late John Rutherford of Aberdeen, at St Mary Abbots, Kensington, London. He died at his London residence, 1 Clanricarde Gardens, Bayswater on 20 Jan 1880, having been in failing health due to cancer for several years and was buried in Kensal Green cemetery. Jane remarried in June 1890 to Captain Ralph Slazenger (1845-1910), Sheriff of the City of London and, with his brother Albert Slazenger, were the 'famous' Slazenger Sports equipment, textile & footwear Company.

NZ Times, 16 Aug 1897 STRANGE-MURE - On the 15th of August, at Featherston, William Thomas Henry Strange-Mure, in his 64th year.
Seven months later, on 21 March 1898, Annie, now owner of a considerable amount of freehold property in the city, remarried to John Deighton (1862-1934), cabinetmaker by trade. On 3 March 1900, John Deighton was convicted of murdering their daughter, 3 month old Mona Caroline Rebecca Deighton, at 50 Cuba Street. His plan, he said, was to murder Annie, the baby and then himself, but lost his nerve.
Deighton, who is said to have been a rabbiter employed on Mr Beetham's station, Wairarapa, some short time back, contracted a marriage with a Mrs Strangemure and the union is believed not to have been a happy one owing it is alleged to domestic infelicity. For some time Deighton has complained of neglect of the murdered infant by its mother and during the absence of the latter from home this evening, Deighton .. (go to link) .. After committing the crime Deighton proceeded to Mount Cook Police Station and gave himself up, giving as a reason for taking the life of the child that he thought it would be better off dead than neglected as it had been. Deighton bears a good character and what was the reason of his sudden impulse has not yet been explained. He had not been drinking.
- John gave himself up and gave his statement
- The Verdict
