Samuel Mcnett B 1803 Scottland

I have a death certificate for Levi E. McNett b. 1834 in Ohio d. 1919 in Pennsylvania. It shows his father as Samuel McNett born in Scottland and his mother as Elisa Sheperd born in Ohio. None of the McNett Census records agree with the birth locations of Samuel and Elisa. Does one assume the death records are the best source and does anyone have any records on Samuel and Elisa McNett?
