Who was Sarah Ann Grenfield/Granfield?
Apart from being the second wife of Anthony Charles Nathan I know nothing of her, her parents, where they were from, any siblings etc...

Anthony's first wife, Sarah Ann Harris had died in 1878 so assuming they married after that.
They had at least one child, Anthony Carroll Nathan born 1892 - (he served in WWI and his son Carroll Nathan died in WW2) - he became a barrister and solicitor and died 1966 in Wellington. He married Ngaere Bayly.

I dont even have birth or death data for Sarah Grenfield and finding anything is very difficult as sites looked at assume you are looking for Greenfield!!

Hi. Reminder that I am researching these families also. I have NATHANs etc in my tree due to marriage to Sarah Ann HARRIS. My late mother-in-law's ancestors were the HARRIS' from Tamerton Foliot Village, Plymouth, Devon, England.

Try looking for Sarah Ann GRANFIELD and let me know what you find. My little boy broke my NZSG cd-roms in half. Ouch. Can't do any more lookups.

Carrol Robert NATHAN born 18 Oct 1918 Taihape, New Zealand died December 1941, Middle East. No burial details known by me.

Hi,

I just did a quick search which is very interesting....

No GRENFIELD name at all is registered on the BDM Marriages.

No GREENFIELD name married any Nathan's.....BUT

SARAH ANN GRAUFIELD married ANTHONY NATHAN IN 1889

BIRTHS:

1891 Anthony Carroll NATHAN
Father: Anthony Nathan
Mother: Sarah Ann

BUT:

1875 JANE FRANCIS ANTIONETTE NATHAN
Father: Anthony Nathan
Mother: Sarah Ann

The plot thickens!!!

NZSG Marriages 1836-1956 has Sarah Ann GRANFIELD as second spouse for Anthony NATHAN m. 1889. She was the mother of Anthony Carroll. I think this was quite a smart move: he wouldn't get confused and call wife #2 by the wrong name!

Don't accept as gospel, but she looks to be part of a single GRANFIELD family which included the following, all born outside NZ except as stated, unless never registered.

Edwin 1833 - 1877 (father?)

Have not found a wife/mother.

Lucy Susan c. 1853 (bore a child in NZ, William Henry GRANFIELD 1876/7 d. 1877). Married George DAVEY 1878.

Jane Maria c. 1854 - 1918 = Edward COLLINS 1888.

William Henry 1855-1875.

Alice c. 1860 - (1905 or 1933?) = Michael O'CONNOR 1882
Eliza c. 1860 - 1941 = William SPINKS 1877

Edwin 1863-1945 = Ada Winifred NATHAN; 5 NZ born children. Appears to be the end of the GRANFIELD line, as their boys died young.

Sarah Ann c. 1866 - 1941 = Anthony NATHAN 1889.

Ellen c 1868 - 1951 = George William HEAN 1899

In NZBDM deaths there appears a Gladys Myrtle GRANFIELD/SMITH. After much research I was able to satisfy myself that this is a transcription error: s/be GRANDFIELD (who became SMITH), so can be ignored. All births marriages and deaths belong to this one family.

Incidentally, you will note that Ada Winifred NATHAN and Anthony NATHAN almost certainly married GRANFIELD siblings.

My research so far shows that all are buried between Palmerston North and Karori.
