I could not find a James keeler that was born 1769 however I did find the one you are looking for. James Keeler was born 13 June 1748, in Ridgefield, Ct. Death was 3 April 1826, in Essex, Chittenden County, Vermont. According to the book titled "Keeler Family- Ralph Keeler of Norwalk, CT and some of his descendants" compiled by Wesley B. Keeler, Published by Gateway Press Inc, Baltimore, 1985

James and Abigail were early settlers in Lenox, Berkshire County, MA where she inherited land from her father (Berkshire County L. R. 47:47)

Revolutionary War Records show James served in Capt. White's Company, Col. John Browne's Regiment of Massachusets State Troops. His name appears in an abstract of sums due officers and men of the militia for three months service in 1780 (MA Soldiers and Sailors)
Father is Samuel Keeler born 9 Feb 1715/16 in Ridgefield, CT. Mother is Mary Kendrick

Marriage: Abigail Whitlock born 20 Jan 1749/50

Children: Samuel Keeler b. 13 Dec 1769 in Lenox, Berkshire County, Mass.
Abbie Keeler born 1771
Polly Keeler b. 11 Feb 1772 in Lenox, Mass.
Lydia Keeler b. 9 April 1774 in Lenox.
Rachel Keeler b. 8 May 1776 in Lenox.
John Whitlock Keeler b. 29 July 1786 in Bradford, Orange Co. Vermont
James Keeler B. 17 Dec. 1789 died April 3, 1826

I hope this is enough, I went thru google.com and put in the name of James Keeler born 1748 and all this information and more came up. It is just too much for me to relay here. But go to the google.com and just put in the name or go to genealogyintimemagazine.com and that is a free site to look for other information. Just put it in google also. Or go to Find a Grave.com and put in his name put in Vermont and you will find all of the Keelers. If you need more help then we are here to help. I hope I can be of assistance. smith41

Thanks for your helpful response. I looked at the book on Ralph Keeler & descendants. The will of Samuel, father of James puzzled me for a while, because he gave significant amounts of money to all of his kids except James. Then I saw that James was apparently a deserter from Revolutionary War troops. That would be consistent with the distance between the birth of his last child in MA in 1776 & the birth of his next & last child in VT in 1786. Being retired military myself, I say shame on him. Although others have assumed James & Abigail were married in CT, I'm inclined to believe they were married in MA.
