James Hughes died at his house, Clifton Farm, Malmsbury, on the 19 April 1885 aged 65. The death registration shows only his father's name as James. Mr Hughes was a Sydney native, but came to this side of the Murray 44 years ago. For a long time past he suffered severely from an affection of the liver, which in connection with dropsy proved fatal on Sunday last. Mr Hughes was 65 years of age. The funeral takes place to-day at half-past two o'clock, the place of interment being the Malmsbury Cemetery.
James Hughes and his wife Elizabeth also had a son named James Albert Hughes who, in 1888, drowned in a well in the back yard of his mother's house in Malmsbury. He was 5 years old.
