Selected Philippine Name for Ancestral Research Why

edmondsallan - Hi everyone - This afternoon I thought I should spell out the " Sur- name " of the Filipino Family , we selected . This exercise may assist some of you , to sort of " get the idea " of ,how , when , where etc' etc/ to have a go until you find your own method , or way of working any ancestry blog . The main reason for selecting this particular family is today they acknowledge they come from , -
" Native- Spanish - Chinese" ancestry . This will also give us some difficulty in the researching - why ? Reasons - most Spanish ancestry, in general , is well recorded , well back .
Chinese Ancestry is recorded, very difficult to follow , difficult to understand if you are not a Chinese or can / write - speak - understand Chinese . Last but not least , the " Filipino " native
( just terminology for - " we were the first here " ) have been through several wars ,conquered ( ???? ) three or four times , Thousands of families wiped out- Church & any other type of ancestral records you can think of., nearly totally destroyed by invaders , & on top of that , at the very beginning of the " Spanish rule " They were given an ' alphabetical surname ' .by the local priest from a list he had given to him by the government officialls . Just for a few seconds dear readers . Just stop !! ! and have a think on that last paragraph . I hope you can feel the Mind set it can give you .Yes --- I think we are going to have some headaches doing this families Ancestry .!!! We should enjoy this particular ancestor research . It takes in a bit of History , Spanish galleons , Sea currents wind directions , mule trains , even the king of Spain . all of which we will need to sort out , " How in the blazes , or what made them go to such isolated -Part Malayan native population - who hated the sight of foreigners- Even killed a few thousand of them . Besides all that and lots- lots of other things , Why would a well , - once - to do full blooded Spanish family , allow their one of their kind , to marry a a full blooded Chinese . who like them ,was born 1/2 a world away. Also of interest is most of the government officials were born , educated and developed their abilities in Madrid . At the same Time / Era most of the imigrants that went to settle in the 7,000 Islands of the Philippines, came from Northern Spain, The greater number came from close to the Basque Border region and would fight official-dom and themselves at the drop of a hat . Could make a good story dear reader . By the way , I nearly forgot .The Family we have chosen - "Chinese " name ,which is still going strong in 2010 AD - is " Gantuangco "
The Spanish family name to make up the the other 1/2 of the original ancestral marriage was " Dona Pauilian Leyson " who in 1813 AD was classed as a " Native " ( of Malayan extraction ) born on the Island of Cebu , one of the ( largest Islands ) " Dona !!! ) was a direct descendant of " Andres de Laya " -b- 25th April 1594 in San Miguel ,Valladolio , Spain .a Spanish Noble man with inherited wealth . The official records ( of which I have copies of ) is known only to the Catholic Church . Although the LDS have tried to record any burial records in the Philippines .
