JOHN HAMILTON SHALLCROSS - posted 12 Sep 2012
(1835 – 1911)

John Hamilton Shallcross is my 2nd great grandfather. He was born on Tuesday, May 5th, 1835 in Pennsylvania. This date was calculated based on his death certificate, which shows that he was 75 years, 10 months, and 5 days of age when he died. Though he was born just a few years into the mass immigration from Europe to the United States, his ancestors had actually immigrated more than a hundred years before he was born. He was the youngest of the ten children of Charles Shallcross and Jane Van Buskirk. Living on a farm on the eastern coast of the United States, he was probably little aware of the Mexican-American War which was being waged in the western part of the country when he was a boy. Apparently his family had not been lured by the prospect of untold riches as they did not migrate west during the California Gold Rush. Until 1856, he lived on his parent’s farm in Oxford Township, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In June of 1856, at age 21 he married Phoebe A. Fisher. The American Civil War broke out in 1861, and while he did register for the draft a couple of years later, there is no evidence that he actually served during the Civil War. At age 26, he was married and had two children, Josephine, age 4, and Samuel, age 2. When he was 27, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. John was a farmer and had a farm in Oxford Township, Pennsylvania, that was situated between the farms of Leonard and Mary Shallcross, his grandfather and grandmother, and George and Rebecca Shallcross, his brother and sister-in-law. The value of his real estate at that time was $2300.00. The value of his personal estate was $700.00.

In June of 1863, John registered for the United States Civil War Draft. The area in which he was living was now beginning to take shape and he found himself living in Precinct 9, Ward 23 of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Bristol Road. At the age of 29, he was baptized in the Rehoboth Methodist Episcopal Church in what was and still is the Frankford section of the City of Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter, President Abraham Lincoln became the first of two presidents that John would live to see assassinated. By the age of 37, in 1870, he had two more children, Edward, age 6 and Eva, age 3. He and his wife were still living on the same farm they occupied in 1860. By 1872, he had given up the farm and was now a wheelwright. By 1880, at the age of 45, he had had one more son, Albert, then age 10. He was living with his wife and his four youngest children at 938 Bridge Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although he was now living in the City of Philadelphia, his home was not really very far from his former farm. City expansion had brought the cities northeastern boundaries out to engulf what was once Oxford Township.

His oldest daughter Josephine had left the family home, but his son Samuel married a girl named Martha and she was living with John’s family in 1880. Samuel and Martha are my great grandparents. Toward the end of that decade, when he was in his early fifties, both his daughter Eva and his son Edward were married. Edward left the family home, but his sister Eva remained with her new husband. In 1901, President William McKinley was also assassinated. In 1903 the Wright brothers made their first historic flight, and just five years later, the first Model T Ford automobile was manufactured. By 1910 the family had moved to 1782 Bridge Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living there along with his wife Phoebe, his son James, his daughter Eva and her husband, William Hinkle, and their children, William Jr., Eva, and Ethel. John died on March 10th, 1911 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The cause of death was listed as apoplexy. He was buried on March 14th, 1911 in North Cedar Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a cemetery that his ancestors had helped to establish.
