Shingwauk Cemetery
Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
Compiled 1994
Or, the Bishop Fauquier Memorial Chapel Cemetery.
In 1876, Mr. William Stratton gifted a little plot of land adjoining the lot where the Shingwauk Home stood.
Although the quiet spot has changed very little, the original parcel of land has been increased and extended westward. The old section of the cemetery was discribed as being one chain (66 feet), square in size, the new section measures 135 feet by 67.5 feet.
The earliest burials that took place in the old section were: Hannah Weezhoo of Walpole island at the age of 13 years, January 20, 1876, Solomon Corning of Sarnia Reserve at 8 years of age, May 18, 1876 and a young woman who was a nurse in Mr. E. F. Wilson's family who died suddenly.
There are about 150 people buried in the small cemetery, with approximately 31 stones. The cemetery is still used to inter the ashes of those who have chosen the Shingwauk Cmetery for their final resting place.
This cemetery is located in a tranquil, wooded area behind the Bishop Fauquier Memorial Chapel.
