MONK
- At Maharahara, on Thursday, 1st August, from the effects of burns and shock, Alice, the beloved wife of A. G. Monk and eldest daughter of John and Alice Galloway, Maharahara; aged 28 years.
Daily Telegraph, 3 Aug 1901 In this busy work-a-day world there are many noble deeds that pass by unnoticed, but one has occurred here that has had a sad ending and deserves recognition. Three weeks ago, on the 12 July, a fire took place at Maharahara and the dwelling of Mr Monk was destroyed, the only occupants at the time being Mrs Monk and her three little children who nearly perished, but Mrs Monk bravely rescued the children and go terribly burned about the body in so doing. The children are recovering from their injuries, but the youngest, a baby under 12 months old, is still suffering. Mr Monk was away at Ngapaeruru carving out a new home for his family when the fire occurred and is deserving of much sympathy. The Bush Advocate gave the following account of the accident and the brave woman's successful attempt to save her children. The fire occurred at midnight:- Awakened by the flames, Mrs Monk seized the baby, opened the room door and rushed outside through the burning kitchen. Her hands, face, neck, breast and legs are all raw and festered, her baby's eyes are closed and its face is a mass of burns. In that state of agony the brave mother put away her baby in safety, made for the room window, broke it open with her hands, which are all cut from the glass, grasped her other two children from the burning bed and saved their lives. In this condition they had to walk half a mile to a neighbour's house on a cold, wet night. Dr M. Macallan is most attentive to the suffers and he is hopeful of the recovery, though they are badly burnt, especially the mother. Since then she has suffered awful agony and, I am sorry to say, that on Thursday she died from her injuries - her life truly sacrificed in saving her children. Mrs Monk was a daughter of Mrs Galloway and niece of Mr G. J. Goldfinch, of Maharahara.

Well-Known Settler Dies Of Injuries
Mr John Douglas Galloway, 41, a farmer, married with a wife and six children, residing at Maharahara, died in the Rawhiti Hospital on Saturday from injuries received in an accident at his farm on Thursday, states a Dannevirke message. Deceased went to get a load of firewood and was found some ten hours later pinned underneath the load, which had capsized. He was internally injured and suffering from shock and collapsed on the Saturday morning. He was chairman of the Maharahara West school committee, a member of the Dannevirke Electric Power Board, of the Dannevirke A. and P. Society and Farmers Union and a representative of the Maharahara riding on the Woodville County Council and was held in high esteem.
Mr Galloway went in the morning of the accident to the back of his farm to get firewood, when the dray capsized, the load falling on him. He was unable to move and being so far from the house his calls for assistance were not heard. The horse was thrown on its back and was also unable to rise and in its struggles its hoofs, at every kick, thrashed close to Mr Galloway's head, but fortunately missed it, In this precarious position the unfortunate settler was compelled to remain through all the long hour from 10a.m. till 8p.m. for his absence at the luncheon hour was attributed to his having spent it at his mother's home, where he was going to take the firewood. It was not till evening therefore, that any anxiety on his account was felt and a search instituted, with the result that he was then discovered by his nephew who was guided to the spot in the darkness by hearing his uncle's groans. Help was at once summoned and the sufferer was conveyed to the house, medical assistance was summoned and Mr Galloway was subsequently removed in the ambulance to Rawhiti hospital, Dannevirke.
Examination showed that no bones were broken, but considerable injuries were sustained from bruises and the pressure of the logs, while his condition was aggravated by the long exposure to the cold and the suspense.
