... Armstrong, Matthew Watson. Mining Speculator. Auckland. Mr. Armstrong was born in Yorkshire. England. In 1841. and was edneated at Bradford. In 1872 he came to New Zealand by the ship ?Matilda Wattenbach,? (arriving 8 Sep 1862) landing at Auckland. During the Maori troubles he was in the commissariat office, and when the war was concluded went to Hokianga to undertake bush contracting, his first venture resulting in his bringing out by tramway 3,000.000 feet of timber for John Webster and Co. On the opening of the Thames Goldfields Mr. Armstrong gravitated thither, and was for many years prospecting throughout the district. He has met with a considerable amount of success, and is more or less interested in most of the mining districts of the Peninsula. Mr. Armstrong is looked upon as one of Auckland's most prosperous mining speculators. He resides at Whangarei where he owns what is claimed to be the prettiest homestead in the district, he was for fourteen years chairman of the Manun (Manui?) School Committee, and also a member of the local road board. Mr. Armstrong belongs to the Whangarei Lodge of Free Masons. He was married to Miss Wharfe, who also came out to the Colony in the ?Matilda Wattenbach.?
