hello monstarr,

I have found an S. Starr in Nelson (which is where Stephen settled) in 1887, where he put in a tender to the Nelson City Council to light the street lamps for the annual fee of £143 ($27,200 today)
No surprise that the lowest tender got the contract, that of F. Gledhill at £100

He tendered again in 1888 for the lighting of D (Port) District. His tender that time was £25. Once again the lowest tender was accepted, that of J. Edmondson at £18

The earliest I can find him in his shop in Hardy St, is in Oct 1888 when he has the agency for the 'Observer'. In 1889 his shop is in Bridge street, Nelson

However, in his death notice in October 1907, he was said to have 'carried on business for the past 25 years' which would make his entry in NZ to be as early as 1882

does this agree with what you have

monstarr001

Thank you, this may help. He had a tobacconist/hair dresser shop in Nelson which his son John helped in running later on. His son John was born in 1888. I am trying to track the name of Stephen Starr's wife back then. I know Stephen Starr married Fanny Laura Beattie in 1902 nut they had no children.

ngairedith

well, that's interesting, because if Steven was here in 1882 (about) one would expect to find his marriage and the birth of any children, at least of John on BDM.

two possibilites

  • He was definitely in the shop by 1888 so a possibility is that he arrived in 1887-1888 with wife and child. This makes the newspaper report a bit of a misprint and should have read '20 years in business'
  • He didn't marry and John was a 'love child' :)

If the first then it will make it easier to find their entry as it narrows down the search to ships within late 1887 to mid 1888
You don't have John's exact birth date do you?

ngairedith

well, more interesting...
Stephen is buried next to a Hannah Starr who died 20 June 1907 aged 49 which makes her birth year about 1858 and Stephen died 4 months later on 7 Oct 1907 aged 51 making his birth year about 1856 (close ages)

of interest there is also a Robert Henry Starr buried in Wakapuaka died 17 Sep 1938 aged 83. This makes his birth year about 1855 - a possible brother of Stephen?
he married Louisa Alice Hill in 1912. Louisa died April 1924 aged 49 (birth year of 1875)

Robert is buried plot 020, block 23
Louisa is buried plot 014, block 23
Stephen is buried plot 016, block 23
Hannah is buried plot 018, block 23

ngairedith

sorry, had hopes up there

Colonist, 21 June 1907 DEATH
STARR - On June 20th, at her residence Collingwood-street, Hannah, beloved wife of Robert H. Starr, in her 50th year. Her end was peace

monstarr001

No I don't hve exact date of birth for John Starr. On the record I have got from the Dunedin city council website it say's he died 27/8/1955 at 67 years of age, is native to England and years in New Zealand 60. So they may have come over as a family.

monstarr001

That's strange as I have a list of Starr marriages and Robert Henry Starr m Louis Alice Hill in 1912. Have pasted it here:
Robert Henry Starr (1855-1938)
- married Louisa Alice HILL (1875-1924) in 1912

monstarr001

If you search Starr on this website it gives you a list of marriages in New Zealand 1872 - 1930

ngairedith

yes, I'm looking at the Dunedin database now

the facts so far:

John was born in England in 1888
his father was here in business in 1888 (but possibly 1882)
John is said to have been in NZ 60 years in 1955 which means he arrived in 1895 when he was 7 so probably with his mother OR maybe with uncle Robert Henry??

It is never straightforward is it :)

monstarr001

No it's not but thank you for helping me I appreciate it.

ngairedith

Robert is easily explained really
He was married to a Hannah ? Starr (probably in England as no record here)

Hannah dies in in 1907 fairly young, 49
Robert remarries 5 years later to Louisa Alice Hill

Louisa dies in 1924 also aged 49
Robert dies in 1938
Stephen had died in 1907 and they are all buried pretty much together plots 14-20, which is side by side or back to back, but that close that I'm am sure Robert must be related to Stephen

monstarr001

Here's what I have so far....
John was married Alice Muriel they divorced and she took their son and daughter to wellington. John's father was Stephen they were both Hairdressers and ran a tobacconist shop in Nelson. It then seems John remarried and moved to Dunedin. We also want to know if John and his second wife had any children as the information I have does not mention if there were any.

in the 1922 Electoral Roll of Dunedin John Starr, Hairdresser, is living at 86b, South Road, Caversham, Dunedin with his wife Irene Lillian, Irene's widowed mother Elizabeth Bardsley and Irene's spinster sister Annie Bardsley aged 39.
This is 5 years after their marriage and no children mentioned

monstarr001

ok thanks for that. But let me know if you can find out any more on Stephen.

monstarr001

Talked with my husband and we are now thinking that Robert Henry & Hannah Starr may actually be John's parents. Can you see if they had any children and maybe what their names were? I am new at this family research so sorry for all the questions.

ngairedith

no, not father & son because their dates are:
Robert Henry Starr (1855-1938)
Stephen Starr (1856-1907)

monstarr001

I mean Robert Henry Starr (1855-1938) could be John Starr's farther (1888-1955)
which would have made Henry 33yrs when John was born. And Stephen could be Roberts brother making him john's uncle.

monstarr001

We thought Stephen was John's father only because they both were hairdresser's but he could have followed in his uncles steps.

ngairedith

Louisa Alice HILL (1875-1924) who Robert married in 1912 was previously married as per this notice in the 'Colonist' 11 March 1915: The Friends of Mr Robert Starr are respectfully informed that the Funeral of his late Stepson, George Henry Hills will leave his residence, Tipahi-street, this (Thursday) afternoon, at 2.30 o'clock. for the Nelson Cemetery ... George Henry was 13/14 and drowned at Motueka while swimming with some mates

by the way, Robert bought that cottage in Waimea in 1896

monstarr001

But Robert Henry who may have married Hannah Starr in England could be John's parent's.

ngairedith

yes, I see what you're saying, just trying to find any evidence
no luck in finding Louisa's first husband at the moment, nor the birth of George Henry Hills in NZ. This could mean Louisa arrived in NZ after 1901.

But I digress. When Hannah died in June 1907 the death notices only say beloved wife of Robert, nothing about being the mother of John (not that they always put that)

Of note, the week after Stephen's death his wife Fanny was in court for being a prohibited person obtaining booze

back to it later tonight as have to go out now

I have also maybe tracked a sister of John Starr b) 1888 and left UK for New Zealand with his father Robert Henry and Mother when he was aged 7. They left London January 24th 1895. Mabel Carina Starr born 1895??? This was the year John and his parents left for new Zealand so not sure where and how she fits in. She is recorded as having d) 1957 in Auckland New Zealand. You will see her in the list of Starr Brides listed as Mabel Thorley Starr. I also found John's step sister she is also buried in the family plot in Dunedin "Doreen Lillien Hogg (Starr).
