ROUTES BY STEAM SHIP TO ENGLAND
The Sub-Committee, after comparing the advantages presented by the various lines which have been submitted, are disposed to give their opinion in favour of the route by Torres Straits, in consideration not only of the shortness of distance, and the circumstance that this line affords seas best adapted to steam navigation, on account of the moderate weather and smooth water, but of the considerable and increasing south coming trade in tea, coffee, sugar, rice, manufactured tobacco, rum, and other articles, which are principally directed to where two-thirds of the Australian population are located; and also because it is the shortest line to New Zealand. The Sub-Committee subjoin a table, exhibiting the population and trade in the various settlements.

The Factor reports, at Stewart's Island, December 7, 1846, Fortitude, barque, of Hobart Town, Captain Bailey, one month out, clean; lowered after a large sperm whale off Solander's Island on the evening of the 5th, and killed him, but lost sight of the barque, so remained by the shale all night (the three boats). At daylight the weather was very bad; they saw the ship to leeward, distance three leagues. Captain Bailey left the whale with the two boats, with the intention of going on board. When within 300 yards of the vessel a sea broke into the boat and capsized her. They saw this accident from the ship, but lost their presence of mind, and were consequently unable to render any assistance. As soon as the mates arrived alongside with the whale, the people on board informed them of the accident, but knew not where to direct them in search of the captain. When at last they did find the boat, the captain was delirious and nearly dead, and dreadfully bruised, having been in the water three hours. All the rest had perished; - singular to say, the captain was the only man in the boat who could not swim. The mate left the whale, and took the barque into Paterson's River, Stewart's Island. We spoke her off the Solanders, 26th December; Captain Bailey much better - able to go on deck. Spoke her again January 11, 1847; the Captain able to go in his boat. The Fortitude had not taken anything up to this date.
