AUCKLAND - The Sunflower has been thirteen days on her passage. She has lost fifty head of cattle on the voyage. The Brothers has arrived from the Bay of Islands, and reports that the Nelson, Captain Spurling, and the Pockington, Captain Bulger, both Sydney whalers, had arrived at the port of Russell.
NELSON - Arrived 23rd February, the Peruvian, American whaling ship, Brown, from New London, out nineteen months, with 1150 barrels black and 250 barrels sperm oil. The Peruvian spoke the Daniel Webster, Starbuck, of Nantucket, out forty-three months, with 1500 barrels sperm; on the 4th January, the C.W. Morgan, of New Bedford, out nineteen months, with 1200 barrels sperm; on the 29th January, the Hope, Heoth, of Providence, out eighteen months, with 1500 barrels black oil; on the 31st January the Mount Vernon, Covel, of New Bedford, out six months, with 140 barrels black and 160 barrels sperm oil. The Peruvian has cruised down the eastern coast of both islands, through Foveaux Straights, and up the west coast of this island. While on the west coast she rode out a hard north-east gale in Jackson's Bay, but lost an anchor. On the 15th June last, while cruising on the north-west fishery, the Peruvian nearly ran upon one of the Fox Islands, in a fog, at midnight. The fog suddenly cleared away, and revealed a rocky shore directly ahead. On the following day Captain Brown stood in and examined the island, which he found to be laid down too far to the south-south-east. The island appeared sterile, and covered with snow.
