NSW.DEATHS. 9869/1888 TAIT WILLIAM
WILLIAM ANN
LITHGOW
Australian Town and Country Journal, Saturday 16 June 1888.
LITHGOW.
June 10.

A FATAL ACCIDENT happened to on elderly man named W. Tait on Monday, May 28. He was engaged in erecting the poppet-head at the Oakey Park Colliery, when a derrick pole, used for hoisting the beams, slipped and fell on him, crashing his head in
a terrible manner. Drs. Gibbons and Asher were soon in attendance ; but, unfortunately, they did not succeed in restoring consciousness. The injuries
proved fatal on Thursday evening. An inquest was held before the coroner,
Mr. T. H. Neale, P.M.; and after the evidence had been taken, the jury brought
in the following verdict : "We, the jury impaneled on this inquest, have agreed that the deceased, W. Tait, met his death by the fall of a derrick pole, and some person or persons are to blame for neglecting to see that the tackle was secure before raising the derrick. But there is no evidence to show who the blame rests on."

Janilye...thank you so much for your reply. Yes this is my great great grandfather William who was Married to Annie Wilson. I have found this and some other information on the family but...the really big mystery, and this is where all of the family researchers are stuck is...we can't find his birth anywhere and only know his parents names from his death certificate. They were William Tait and Ann Young. No idea where they were born or lived. Our Family have been trying to solve this for years. We have some information on our William that died here but nothing before that. No travel or immigration records, nothing from when he first came to Australia..just nothing. Some of his children were born in Sydney..but that's about it. I think even though his birthplace on his death cert is Londonderry Ireland...that his family may have come from Scotland but were in Ireland at the time of his birth..to confuse things haha. His wife Annie Wilson was born in Edinburgh Scotland, her mothers maiden name was Struth..also a brick wall in research there. This William was a stonemason, and from research I've figured out there were two William and Ann Tait couples around at this time (mid 1800's) with the William being a stonemason...but I can't connect them as cousins etc as yet. The big questions are what was he doing before Lithgow? Where was he and his wife before Australia? Finding his birth index etc etc...he's a mystery...we have a William Tait Facebook page if your interested...do you have Taits in your tree? Thanks so much for taking an interest and helping..I appreciate it big time.

No! I don't have Taits' in my tree. If I find anything that may help I will add it.
Often, when the family are stuck for answers the in-laws are bound to know. extend your search to the McGeechan and Baxter trees to start.
