Taylor of Walls and Flotta Orkney
Taylor of Orkney
The Pedigree of
Ruby Gwendoline Mary Garbett Taylor
of Wellington, New Zealand
The Orkney Islands consist of 70 beautiful islands in an archipelago lying just to the North of the mainland of Scotland. Neolithic, Pictish, Celtic and Norse settlers have all contributed to the Orcadian gene pool, and islanders' hospitality is world-renowned. Whole families left the islands in times of hardship and privation, to seek a new life on the other side of the world.
The ancestral family of Gwen Taylor earned a hard living from farming and fishing. The culture was one derived from its Viking heritage and quite removed from the mainland Scots. The remoteness led to pragmatic practices, one of which was the custom of "˜hand-fasting'. This happened in the case of Bremner Taylor (b.2 May 1773, q.v.) and Margaret Wilson; it is stated in the 1841 census that Margaret was born in 1766 in Orkney, Scotland, but no record can be found. The parish record states that there is a gap in the baptisms for the parish of Walls from about June 1764 to October 1766. Her legal spouse was Bremner Taylor, but they were not married in the parish church as, until very recent times, it was not necessary to marry in a church or a registry office. In remote locations, with no resident clergyman, hand-fasting was an alternative, recognised in law. The bride and groom held hands and proclaimed their unity to witnesses. The couple could then live for a year and a day as a married couple. After this period had passed, should the couple wish to part ways, they could with no hard feelings. If they married in church, a deposit of two silver coins was payable to the parish, and if no child was born within one year after the marriage, the money was returned, but if a child was born the money was forfeited.
I The First Generation
Alexander Taylor 1
He was the great-great-great-great grandfather of Roy Holderness of Napier, New Zealand.
He is the earliest ancestor to be located for this line of the Taylor family. No parish record of his birth can be found, although he was probably born about 1740. He married, or "˜hand-fasted' Katherine (Kathrine, Kathrina) Inksatter (pronounced locally as "˜Inkster' and therefore, sometimes spelled that way), sometime before 1768, in Walls and Flotta, a parish, mostly in the island of Hoy. This parish, (the name was, anciently, Valis or Waes), consists of the southern or "˜Walls' part of the island of Hoy, the islands of Flotta and Pharay, and the uninhabited isles of Little Rysay, Flotta-Calf, and Switha; it is bounded on the north by the parish of Hoy, on the east by Scalpa Flow, (a large natural harbour) and on the south and west by the Pentland Frith.
A "˜Katharine Insater' is recorded as having been baptised in Orphir, on Mainland, Orkney, 10 December 1744, daughter of William Inksater and Isabel Slater. Another "˜Katherine Inksater' was baptised at Ophir, 10 October 1746, daughter of Thomas Inksatter and Katharine Clouston. However, in the 18th century, the distance between Orphia and Longhope would probably have been too great to make the link.
The following is an extract from the research of Roslyn Vernon Chapman of New South Wales, Australia "“ "Taylor Stories"
"There are two Alexander Taylors born in Orkney. The first was christened on 27 November 1715 in the Parish of St Andrews, Orkney, the son of James Taylor and Hellen Grotsetter, making Alexander 53 when Cecilia was born. [This] Alexander has a sibling "“ Margaret christened on 23 April 1713 also in St Andrews.
The second was born on 15 March 1724 in the Parish of Orphir, Orkney, the son of Robert Taylor and Barbara Inksatter, making him 44 when Cecilia was born. In Scottish tradition the eldest son takes his paternal grandfather's name, the second son takes his father's name, and the third son takes his maternal grandfather's name. The eldest daughter takes her maternal grandmother's name, the second daughter takes her mother's name, and the third daughter takes her paternal grandmother's name. None of this information helps, as the family does not seem to follow the set pattern, but the Orphir christening is the most likely as the siblings of this marriage are "“ James, born, 18 November 1716; Andrew, born 10 January 1720; John, born 6 January 1721; Margaret, born 30 March 1723; Alexander, born 15 March 1724; Robert, born 1 February 1725; Charles, born 23 January 1726; Christian, born 27 June 1727; Katherine, born 21 February 1729; Thomas, born 2 January 1732; and Cecilia, born 22 December 1734. This Alexander is thought to have married and he is thought to have had two sons born in Birsay, Orkney "“ James in 1749 and William in 1754. (I do not like either possibility, RVC)
BUT some Orkney members of the family state that the Taylors gave a gold purse towards the building of Edinburgh Cathedral which means that they could have lived near Edinburgh. If so, the Taylor family could have escaped to Orkney after the Battle of Culloden in 1745. This was not uncommon. There are many Alexander Taylors born in the 1840's around Edinburgh.
There is only one "˜Kathren Inksatter', christened on 22 November 1733 in the Parish of Firth and Stenness, Orkney, the daughter of James Inksatter and Euphan Nicolson, but there is also a marriage of a "˜Ketherine' Inksatter to James Folsetter in 1752 in the Parish of Sandwick, Orkney. This could be the same person, and if she was a widow, taking Scottish custom, she would have reverted back to her maiden name. If this is correct then [this] Katherine had a sibling, Elizabeth, christened in 1744. No other "˜Katherine Inksatters' have been found on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' [Family Search] International Genealogical Index. All the Inksatter records come from Orkney and Inksatter is an Orkney/Viking surname." (R V Chapman, great-great-great-great-granddaughter)
Without the existence of relevant documentation, it seems unlikely that these lines of ancestry can be taken back any further.
NB: The area in the Parish of Walls and Flotta, called "˜Longhope' by the locals, was called "˜Osmundwall' or "Osmondwall" in official records.

There is a record in the LDS Family Search database for a James Robertson Taylor Groat who filed a Draft Registration in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, District 6, but this would have been when he was 45 and past active service age, so it seems unlikely that this is the same man, even given the name.
