Ethel Ann TIMPERLEY is my wife's Great Grandmother. She was born 1 July 1876 in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, New Zealand. She was one of at least 12 children. She married Thomas Henry NORTON (born 17 Jan 1870 Russell, NZ) 21 December 1891 when she was 15 and pregnant with Ethel Elizabeth. They had 12 known children. Around 1914-1916, she ran off to Christchurch to live with Edward Thomas COLLETT in Christchurch, taking her two youngest with her. Ethel and Thomas Henry NORTON eventually divorced in 1931. She died in Christchurch 19 June 1962.

Ethel's parents were: Elizabeth Ann HOWE born 1846 (christened 26 Dec 1852) Russell, Bay of Islands, NZ; died 4 Apr 1895 Towai, Northland, NZ and Joseph TIMPERLEY born 1839 Manchester, UK; died Nov 1914 New Zealand. They were married 11 Sep 1872.

Joseph TIMPERLEY had been married before. He married Margaret HARTLE in Manchester, England on 1 Jan 1861. Joseph?s dad is listed as Samuel. This is as far back as I have managed to get on this side. Margaret died in 1863. They had one child Margaret Ann who was christened in Manchester 9 Mar 1862. Not sure what happened to the child and whether she came to NZ when Joseph emigrated.

Joseph TIMPERLEY then married in 1899 his daughter's husband's mother, Ann Clara NORTON (nee Simons)!

Elizabeth Ann HOWE was the daughter of William HOWE and Ann WILLIAMS (both children of transported convicts) who married 15 May 1826 St Philip's Church, Sydney, Australia.

Ann WILLIAMS was born 15 Jan 1809 Sydney, Australia; died 4 Sep 1862 Russell, NZ. She was the daughter of Barnard WILLIAMS (born 27 Feb 1780 London, England; died 22 April 1822 Sydney, Australia) and Ann RALPH (born 1788 Mancetter, Warwickshire, England; died 4 Jul 1827 Sydney, Australia); married 9 Apr 1810 Sydney, Australia. William HOWE was born in Sydney, Australia on 14 Mar 1801; died 12 Jan 1853 Russell, NZ. He was the son of Elizabeth HASTINGS and probably Matthew PEARCE/PIERCE. He was registered as both HASTINGS and PIERCE but was christened as William PIERCE. He was more or less adopted by the NSW Government printer, George HOWE, his mother's de facto husband, taking on his surname. Elizabeth was born 1784 Maidstone, Kent, England; died 1828 Sydney, Australia. Elizabeth was sent to Australia for stealing. She had been sentenced at Maidstone, Kent 23 July 1798. She arrived in Sydney on the 'Speedy' in 1800. She was assigned to the care of Matthew PEARCE, the landholder at Seven Hills, Toongabbie, NSW but was sent away after it was discovered she was pregnant. She then lived with George Howe for numerous years before the relationship broke down. She eventually married another former transported convict, James WINTER.
