They settled in Taita, Wellington where he was a `sawmiller`

He had another 9 children.

They moved from Taita because of flooding and went to Mangaroa - 20km NE of Taita in the Upper Hutt where he carried on milling.

He built the house that he named "STONESTEAD" about 1860 and which is now a historics place and is said to be haunted by his son JOHN (It is said that John was so broken hearted at the early death of his baby girl, Edith Rose - who died as a toddler due to an accident with scalded milk - that his ghost haunts the house `Stonestead`, that his father David built in 1860.
It is now a historic house in Te Marua)
