the EBBETTs from Cornwall to New Zealand

Journal by ngairedith

Needing a bit of help for this family tree...
William Wilkins EBBETT married Ann HARRIS
- probably around Cornwall England
- Ann was his 2nd wife

I have 3 children only so far for them:
William, John Harris & Charles Henry

I would like anything else on these and also any other children, including those of William and his first wife (what was her name etc)

John Harris EBBETT was born 11th Feb 1853 in St. Keverne, Helston, Cornwall
- he left Cornwall on the 24th September 1874 on board the CLARENCE, arriving in Napier on the 5th January 1875.

He served in the Armed Constabulary, later settling on a dairy farm in Woodville where he was the local milkman delivering milk to everyone in Woodville.

- He married Annie HAMBLING when he was 29 and she was 24

They didn`t have children of their own but brought up the children of his brother William who died shortly after the death of his wife Mary Ann KIRK (mother of the children)

- he apparently remarried, to a Emma Maria EDWARDS but I have not found anything to verify this. Can you help?

his brother:
Charles Henry EBBETT was born about 1856 in Cornwall
- he emigrated with his brother John on the CLARENCE arriving into Napier on the 5th January 1875

- he married Alice REEVE on the 8th August 1886
- their known children were:

19th Jan 1888 Frank Rodgers Ebbett
- he married Nellie WHITE on 4th April 1919
- a daughter of Bedford Webb WHITE & Mary Jane WILSON
- he died 11th December 1945 aged 57

29th Aug 1889 Frederick Charles Ebbett
- he married Lena Mabel BENNISON on 7th April 1920
- a daughter of George Robert BENNISON & Angelina BLEWETT
- he died 28th February 1947 aged 57

23rd Feb 1891 John Harris Ebbett
- he married Emma Ellen Grace WALLACE on 17th Jan 1923
- a daughter of John Alexander WALLACE & Emma Ellen WORKMAN
- he died 23rd February 1973 on his 82nd birthday

22nd Jun 1893 Mary Ann Fifield Ebbett
- she married William James TAIT on 22nd June 1921

14th Aug 1895 Eliza Ellen Reeve Ebbett
- she married Jonathan GRAHAM on 20th December 1922
- a son of William John GRAHAM & Sarah McFADDEN

4th Oct 1897 twin - Thomas Reeve Ebbett
- he married Lillian Ann EBBETT on 21 March 1922
- a daughter of Joseph EBBTT & Jane HALLASEY
- were these Ebbetts related ???
- he died 2nd November 1960 aged 63

4th Oct 1897 twin - William Wilkins Ebbett
- he married Marion Evelyn Linda McDERMOTT on 14th April 1927

Thank you for your help in the past. It's pay back time and I hope the following may be of interest to you.

William Wilkin EBBET bapt. 27 October 1811 Dover, Kent, England. Parents recorded as William and Susanna. There were a few William's and Susanna's married around this time but it's a bit hard to confirm the correct parents. This may be the birth of your William Wilkin EBBETT.

A possible first marriage for William may be to a Sarah Maria BEST. They were married in Kent, England on the 18 September 1832. William was recorded as William Wilkin EBBITS.

There was a Joseph William EBBETT baptised in Gwithian, Cornwall on the 29 July 1838. His parents were recorded as William and Sarah Maria. I think it is safe to say Joseph was from the 1832 marriage. William's occupation given as Coast Guard.

I have not located a second marriage for William to Ann HARRIS, but did find four baptisms taking place in St Keverne, Cornwall. William's occupation is given as Coast Guard Man. This makes me think that the William married to Sarah BEST will be the same.

Baptisms located for William and Ann's children are:

1/ Frank Rogers EBBOTT bapt. 2 February 1851 St Keverne.

2/ John Harris EBBOTT bapt. 1 February 1853 St Keverne.

3/ Thomas Frederick Harry EBBATT bapt. 19 August 1853 St Keverne.

4/ George Henry EBBETT bapt. 7 April 1864 St Keverne.

I could not find a baptism for William or Charles Henry in the Keverne records, so they may not have been born or baptised in Cornwall.

Possible deaths for William and Ann.

William* EBBETT buried 19 December 1886 St Keverne, aged 77 years.

Ann EBBETT buried 24 April 1870 St Keverne, aged 51 years.

Marriage details for George Henry EBBETT. Married 20 October 1887, aged 23 years, to Alice BORLASE, aged 23 years. Daughter of Joseph BORLASE, farmer. George's occupation is given as Mariner. His father, William* Wilkin is recorded as deceased, and his occupation given as retired Coast Guard Man.

Three baptisms have been located for George and Alice's children in St Keverne, Cornwall.

1/ Evelyn Mary EBBETT bapt. 1 January 1893.

2/ Daisy Elizabeth EBBETT bapt. 14 January 1896.

3/ Alice Doris EBBETT bapt. 14 July 1897.

George's occupation was still recorded as Mariner in 1897.

Hope this may be of some help.

Regarding Joseph Ebbett and Jane Hallesey.
I was shown a record of Joseph arriving in New Zealand on the ship "Ionic" in 1884. Their origin was recorded as County Cavern, Ireland. I get the impression that there was an uncle and cousins in the Hastings area.
