CORONER'S INQUEST AT PAKURANGA
An inquest was held on the 8th instant before Captain Kells, J.P., on the bodies of William Charles Henry and Margaret Henrietta Berntrop, the twin children of Charles Henry and Priscilla Berntrop, when the following evidence was taken:- Margaret Cherry, being sworn, said "I am the mother of Priscilla Berntrop, who is the mother of the children now lying dead. I was present at the birth of the deceased, which occurred on the 10th November. The birth was naturak, twenty minutes intervening between the birth of each child. They were small and weakly when born and would take to the breast. I fed them on cornflour and arrowroot with cow's milk, but they did not take their food well and did not seem to thrive".
By the doctor: "Both were suffering from thrush. They had convulsions and gradually sank and died on the 5th of December. One at half-past twelve p.m. and the other at ten minutes to seven p.m."
By a juryman: "I considered the children unhealthy in appearance when born."
John Prince Stallard, being duly sworn said: "I am a duly qualified medical practitioner, residing at Otahuhu. I have examined the bodies of the deceased children and find on them no marks of external violence. The bodies of both are very poorly nourished; the faces of both children being very old in appearance. The malar bones being extremely prominent and the eyes very much sunken - there being little or no fat over the whole bodies. The cause of death being in my opinion thrush, followed by inflammation of the stomach".
The jury, of whom Mr Edward Fitzpatrick was foreman, returned a verdict in accordance with the doctor's evidence
