born Alverstoke, Gosport, Hampshire, England to John Pycroft & Mary Jane Marshall.
He married REBECCA CATE (1844-1919) in Alvestoke 26 Oct 1860, when he was 21 and she was 16. Rebecca was also born in Alverstoke. They had 8 children in England then emigrated to New Zealand on the 'WAITANGI,' with their 7 surviving children, departing Plymouth, England 17 July 1878 and arriving in Lyttelton 13 Oct 1878.

GEE On the 23rd December 1911, at Lower Hutt (suddenly), Joseph, beloved husband of Lizzie Gee; aged 52 years
. About midnight on Saturday Constable Holmes discovered a Chinese named Joseph Gee, a cook employed at Young's Family Hotel, in a fit of coughing and vomiting on the Lower Hutt Bridge. A doctor was immediately sent for but the man died before he could be removed. An enquiry was held by the coroner (Mr W. G. Riddell) on Sunday. Medical evidence was to the effect that death was due to hemorrhage of the stomach and lungs during a fit of coughing and a verdict was returned accordingly. Gee was a married man and resided in Railway-avenue, Lower Hutt.

20 June 1893 A peculiar death occurred in Wellington a few days ago. A young man named George Pycroft, aged 22, second son of Mr James Pycroft, Revans-street, was riding a horse near the Basin Reserve, when it shied and fell, bringing the rider down with it. The big toe of young Pycroft's left foot was fractured and he was obliged to lay up. Dr Alexander was called in and was unremitting his his attention, but on the fifth day symptoms of lockjaw set in and on the following morning the patient was dead. Dr Collins was in consultation on the case at the parents' residence the day before death took place.

REBECCA died 5 June 1919 aged 75
NZ Herald, 6 June 1919 The body of an elderly widow named Rebecca Pycroft was found lying in a plantation near John Street this afternoon. The deceased resided in John Street and from appearances it was judged that she had been dead for about an hour. A post-mortem examination is to be made and an inquest will be held at the Magistrate's Court.

WOMAN'S SUICIDE An inquest was held in Wellington on Friday afternoon by Mr F. V. Frazer S.M., concerning the death of Rebecca Pycroft, a widow, 75 years of age, who was found lying dead in John Street plantation on Thursday afternoon. Evidence was given that the deceased had been in bad health for some time. Constable Walsh said he found the body lying on its face and close by was a bottle which contained poison. A verdict was returned that deceased died through poison self-administered while in a state of extreme depression due to ill-health.
