An old identity in the person of Mr Michael Hamilton died at his residence, 105 Nelson-street, Petone, on Aaturday afternoon. Deceased, who was a very old and respected resident of the town, was born at Strathaven, Scotland, in June 1829. He was apprenticed to the cotton trade and muslin weaving and owing to the cotton famine, took to sea life and fireman on the SS Thistle, which ran the blockade during the Civil War in America.
In 1869 Mr Hamilton emigrated to this country in the sailing ship WILD DUCK. He settled in Nelson, and after fifteen years residence there crossed over to Wellington and joined the Gear Company's freezing hulk Jubilee in 1884. He remained there until his retirement, about fifteen years ago. Deceased, who survives his wife by ten years, leaves three sons and one daughter, all grown up. The funeral left for the Taita Ceetery this afternoon

George emigrated to New Zealand on the OLYMPUS which left London 9 Dec 1840, arriving in Port Nicholson (Wellington) 20 April 1841
With him was his wife Ann (nee TAYLOR) and 6 children. Another child, Isaac Earl Featherston Wilkie was born on board 2 weeks before landing .. Dr Isaac Earl Featherston was travelling as a Cabin passenger as the surgeon on board. Undoubtedly, Isaac was named after him.
George returned to Scotland some time before 1863 which is when he married Jane Wallace.
He died 2 years later, the year following the birth of a daughter Georgina
