Thomas Matthew Atkinson, born in Cumberland, England in 1853. Emigrated to Kanieri, Westland, New Zealand with his parents Matthew and Jane (Cowen) Atkinson before June 1867 when their son, William Carr Atkinson was born in Kanieri.
Thomas married Mary Elizabeth Brocklehurst (1856 - 1897) in Hokitika 08.09.1877. They lived in Hokitika, Launceston, Tasmania, Melbourne, Victoria and back in New Zealand in the vicinity of Hokitika. By February 1894 their daughter Ruby Elizabeth (born in Melbourne 1887) and Thomas were the only surviving members of the family. Ruby lived with her Brocklehurst Grandparents. Her grandmother died in 1909. Her grandfather not until 1913,but was suffering from dementia. The last Papers Past entry for Thomas, Civil Engineer and Surveyor was in 1907 when he was surveying a road in Okarito. No records of his death have been located. The Police have no record of his having been reported missing and no missing persons notice appears in papers past. The family story is that he was carrying gold bullion (???) across Arthurs' Pass and was never heard of again. His mother died in Christchurch August 1910 where his sister, Mrs Tipler (formerly Mrs Edward Robinson of Greymouth) was living. A second sister, Charlotte, Mrs Peter Reynolds was in Wellington and died in 1922. There are no household census records available in NZ.I cannot afford subscriptions to siyes such as ancestry where there are some NZ electoral records.
