Trying to Find Thomas Bastin S Heritage

In a NZ newspaper dated 13/1/1917, Mr Thomas Bastin received advice from England that hos younger brother, Captain E Bastin was killed in action on November 13 in France.

Sympathetic references to him appear in Kent newspapers.

Capt E Bastin was born in Surrey in 1879, was awarded a medal by King of Italy for his rescue work after Messina earthquake. Took part in naval expedition to Antwerp and Gallipoli.

He must have been married because the King and Queen wired his widow with condolences.

I have very little detail of where Thomas came from. A Thomas Bastin arrived in New Zealand on the "Cardigan Castle" in 1877. But haven't been able to find anything concrete earlier than that.

I'd appreciate any help anybody can provide me?
