Trying to Link 1700 S Nelsonancestor to Civil War Ancestors

In an old family Bible there are the names William and Mary Nelson and their 4 children. The next entry goes directly to the Civil War with John Nelson Carney. We can trace the line directly to John,but cannot connect the dots from there back to William and Mary.I am at my shop and will fill in the exact names and dates when I get home and make sure my info is correct.
