Tuke of Wicklow, Ireland

Journal by lan

I am researching my husband's side of our family tree and have come across a brick wall!

Tuke is a very common name - you think? For some reason this particular line of Tuke's is hard to find, John Tuke was born c1836 in County Wicklow, Ireland. He married Mary Brown (MS Harrison) in Dec 1863 in Whitehaven, Cumberland. Mary already had a child named William to her first husband. I am then able to follow John and his wife to Scotland in 1871 where his occupation is a coal miner and they have four children William (Mary's son to her first marriage, Charles (born in Ulverston, Lancashire in 1864), John (born in Yorkshire in 1866) and Benjamin (born in Dalrymple Scotland in 1869).

By 1881 the family has moved to Moresby Park, Whitehaven, Cumberland and also have two daughters Mary Ann (born in Hunslset, Yorkshire in 1874) and Susan(born in Muirhouses Pit, Lanarkshire on 11 Jan 1877), William is no longer living with the family and I have not been able to track him down after the 1871 census.

By 1891 John and Mary are living in Stanley Cum Wrenthorpe, Yorkshire, and next door is their son John with his wife Mary Wills and their three daughters Mary, Jane and Elizabeth. Charles is living in Barrow in Furness and working as a shipyard labourer. Benjamin died in 1872 in Yorkshire.

In 1894 John's wife Mary dies aged 58 and John then moves up to Scotland where he remarries. His second wife is Margaret Edgar Tweedie and they married on the 4 August 1899. The 1901 census records them living in Hamilton, Scotland.

John died on 28 February 1906, cause of death is recorded as "Acute intestinal obstruction". His parents are listed on the death record as John Tuke - Coal Miner and Ann Robinet.

I have been able to trace John's decedants to present day but I am unable to go further back. I have looked at Griffiths Valuation where there are several John Tukes listed. I have added posts to various Irish Ancestry web sites to no avail.

Can anyone help?

Hi, my name is Eileen and I am also doing my husbands family tree. My husbands grandmother was Gemima Tuke from Avoca. Do you know what part of Wicklow your John Tuke came from? Was he Protestant or Catholic. How far back have you gone and what info do you need. I will help if I can. The problem with the Tukes in Wicklow was that both protestant and catholics had mixed marriages and it is very confusing. Looking forward to your email. My email address is eotbarcoe@gmail.com
