JOB VILE 1845-1905 Manawatu & Wairarapa -

Journal by ngairedith

In the 1880s a Cobb & Co. Royal Mail Service ran from Masterton in the Wairarapa to Woodville in the Manawatu, stopping at Hastwell's stables along the way and passing through Eketahuna.

Job went into competition with them and offered a similar service, undercutting Cobb & Co's price, from £1 down to 15 shillings

He was married to Helen Bland RAYNER in Mataikona in 1866 and had 15 children in 20 years.

I don't know if there is a connection I have a William Robinson Hastwell in my family who was born in Kirkby Stepehn Westmorland and moved to New Zealand he had a coaching stables in Wairarpa excuse spelling. I was sure I had something that mentioned Cobb but cant find it at the moment. I don't know what your connection is with the Hastwell family.

Dear Helene,
You will see from the Hastwell Web page, that I am a Hastwell. It may be of interest to you, that my cousin Alec Hastwell emigrated to NZ. circa 1949 at the age of 18. He died about four years ago in the hospital at Nelson.
The family were domiciled in the Kirby Stephen area until late 19th. century. The closure of the lead mines made subsistance very dificult. There was a period of emigration to Lancashire; Blackpool and Burnley. I would be willing to discuss further. Please contact me at:c.hastwell@ntlworld.com

Hello Ngairedith
Job Vile was a coach and livery stable proprietor. He and his wife Helen Vile are buried at Mangatainoka, Pahiatua.
Job Vile was the first Mayor of Pahiatua and was very influential in getting the Pahiatua bushland opened up for settlement.
Herbert Vile ( Job's son) and his wife Winifred are also buried at Mangatainoka.
Several generations of the Vile family lived in the original Vile homestead in Sedcole Street, Pahiatua over the years. I can provide a contact, he is 'Kitty' Vial's son.
